  • Peaceful, private accommodation in the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park
  • Cabriel Waterfalls 20 minutes’ drive and historic Cuenca 50 minutes
  • Comfortable and self-contained caravan with a private pool and hot tub
Looking to have a peaceful slice of rural Castile-La Mancha all to yourselves? Valle del Hontanar may be the answer to your prayers. Tucked away in the sleepy village of Cardenete – which has ancient Roman origins – it is completely self-contained and thoroughly private. And as a bonus, the craggy peaks and forested hills of Cuenca province’s Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park are accessed from the site when it’s time for you to get out and about exploring. Accommodation is in a static caravan built with sustainability in mind, using solar panels to harness energy for power. Valle del Hontanar has two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and can sleep up to four guests comfortably. There is a small kitchen with basics like a fridge and microwave, a dining room and a living-dining room with TV and comfy chairs. Air conditioning keeps you cool in summer, and heating is there for the fresher months. Outside, the covered patio is suntrap with a firepit/barbecue for al fresco dining. A compact swimming pool is there for your private use, along with a hot tub, and the whole place is pet-friendly, so there’s no need to leave your four-legged pals behind either.

Local attractions

The raw scenery in the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park (accessed from the site) offers family-friendly looped rambles leading to spectacular rock formations and picnic spots by peaceful lakes. You can drive almost right up to the Cabriel Waterfalls (20 minutes by car) to witness the splendid cascades tumbling down a sheer rock face, and take a refreshing dip in the turquoise pool. You’re certainly never going to be short of hardcore outdoor options at Valle del Hontanar either; the long-distance PR-CU 04 Sendero de las Dehesas passes close by, and there are gorge walks, rafting expeditions and canyoning adventures to be had along the Cabriel River in rugged Hoces del Cabriel Nature Reserve (an hour’s drive). If you’re keen for the kids to ingest a little local culture, there are castle relics to explore at Cañete (40 minutes) and an impressive hilltop fortress at Enguidanos (half an hour). Heading further back in time, there are prehistoric cave paintings at Villar del Humo (15 minutes), while the handsome walled city of Cuenca (50 minutes) beckons you for a day trip with its colourful houses clinging precariously to the hillside and a melting pot of medieval, Renaissance and baroque architecture.
