- Family-friendly cabins in the Segura mountain range, southern Spain
- Yeste and El Mirador de la Borriqueta viewpoint half an hour’s drive
- Dogs welcome; outdoor pool; on-site snack and tapas bar
Sitting on the winding AB513 road, which carves a path along the edge of Calares del Mundo y de la Sima Natural Park, Las Taneas is a top spot for those who wish to experience the wilder side of Spain, perhaps with the intention to go canyoning, caving or whitewater rafting. And the advantage of staying at this site in the Sierra del Segura range over, say, the Pyrenees is that the climate here has that pleasantly balmy feel typical of southern Spain.
Accommodation is in a wooden cabin sleeping up to six people (there are two bedrooms, plus a sofa bed in the living room) – your four-legged friend is also welcome. Bed linens and towels are included, and the cabin comes with a well-equipped kitchen (from coffee maker to microwave, and most appliances in between), private bathroom and climate control (air con and heating) for your comfort.
A picnic table makes it possible to eat alfresco while surveying the mountainous landscape and the assorted wildlife that calls it home: eagles soaring in the skies above, deer and wild boar.
If you’re keen to explore that landscape up close, the site owners will be happy to give you the low-down on the best trails and local viewpoints, plus the way to reach hidden natural pools surrounded by Mediterranean forest. If wild swimming isn’t for you, there’s an outdoor pool – with a pampering massage jet – at the site, which also has a barbecue area and a snack bar serving breakfasts, tapas and drinks.

Local attractions
El Mirador de la Borriqueta (half an hour’s drive) is an observation deck with spectacular views of Pico Mentiras (the second-highest mountain in the region, at close to 2,000 metres) and the town of Yeste. A hike in the surrounding hills might take you to a disused iron mine dating back to the Roman era.
Yeste (half an hour) is dominated by a well-preserved medieval castle with forbidding crenellated walls. Hike the circular trail up to the Cruz de San Cristóbal for far-reaching views of the town and beyond. On the outskirts of Yeste, the visitor’s centre for the Calares del Mundo y de la Sima Natural Park runs guided tours of the area.
At Ecomuseo Alma Serrana (an hour and 15 minutes) you can learn about traditional life in the Segura mountains, delving deep into the local traditions, costumes and artisanal crafts such as basket weaving.
