  • Luxury bell tents in the spectacular Elgin valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Grabouw and 90 minutes from Cape Town
  • Forest setting with access to cycling, hiking and trail running routes
Wine, pears, apples and a spectacular South African valley setting... it's a sweet setup indeed at Cherry Glamping in the Western Cape. Take a (covetous) look at the site pics to see the stunning surroundings you'll be glamping in with a stay here, in the Western Cape's Overberg region and rich Elgin valley, famed for its scenery, flowers, colour and orchards: this is, as anyone will tell you, where the apples come from... The Elgin valley is centred around the town of Grabouw, the agricultural and apple-growing town that's won awards for its regional wine (try the Sauv Blanc to go truly local). Most handily, Cherry Glamping is a mere 15 minutes' drive from this vast valley's centre, for easy access to the region's vineyards, orchard tours, cider farms and hikes around Sir Lowry's Pass, the mountain pass crossing the Hottentots-Holland range. And if you yearn to go further? Grabouw is on the mammoth N2, with Cape Town an hour and a half away. The luxury bell tents are set up in a handsome and shaded forest, among Elgin's wooded mountains, and on a spacious site with direct access to the plentiful hiking, trail running and cycling routes meandering through the valley. There's bike hire if you do want to explore, and a games room if you'd rather lounge around on site (with the fruits of the local vineyards...?). Barbecues and campfires are both allowed, and all the bell tents have a fridge, a cooker, outdoor furniture and a picnic table.

Local attractions

As well as the mountain biking, trail running and hiking, outdoor adventurers staying at Cherry Glamping can easily access quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and golf: just ask the team for tips. You could also have a hike around the Hottentots Holland mountains and Sir Lowry's Pass, the first range reached by the migrants of the Great Trek in 1835. Another heady, and much famed, pick is ziplining over the Elgin valley on a Cape Canopy tour, among the stunning landscapes of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. This lauded flight has been hailed as one of the best new tourist experiences on the planet: add it to your bucket list and get prepped for your jaw to drop at the sights. An apple museum, distillery and a church with Italian marble are in Grabouw; for other urban days, drive along to Botriver (25 minutes), Caledon (35 minutes) and Hermanus (50 minutes).
