  • Peaceful park by the Moretele river in the Dinokeng Game Reserve
  • A 40-minute drive north of Pretoria; 45 minutes to Cullinan
  • Outdoor pool and lake beach for swimming; game drives to book
Visiting a game reserve is always a great thing to do on holiday, but spending the night in one? Well, that’s pretty special. And that’s exactly what you’ll get to do at Moretele River Lodge, inside the 50000-acre Dinokeng Game Reserve, a malaria-free Big Five reserve just outside Hammanskraal. You’re only about 40 minutes’ drive from the centre of Pretoria here, but it feels a world away from the big city, with a peaceful atmosphere and lots of birdlife to spot (this park is, after all, part of a finfoot conservancy). The park is in a particularly good location for wildlife spotting, in fact, as it’s on the banks of the Moretele river, a tributary of the Crocodile river and a favourite with lots of birds and other beasts. There’s a bird hide nearby along with a bird and animal sanctuary, and the park offers guided game drives for an extra charge. Staying here has something of an adventurous vibe to it, with guests staying in wilderness clearings and having access to a beach area on the river for fishing or wild swimming. There is, however, a touch of luxury too, as you’ll have access to an outdoor swimming pool where you can cool off after a long day of wildlife spotting. Meals can be cooked at the communal barbecue area or on your own campfire; there are shops about 10 minutes’ drive away where you can get all the bits you need, and picnic tables on site for outdoor dining and drinks.

Local attractions

The big draw here is of course the chance to see some big animals – and to do that you can either join a guided game drive or bush walk or explore the 140 kilometres of track in your own vehicle (you’ll need to buy a permit to do this). There are picnic sites and bird hides along the trail where you can sit quietly and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Wildlife sightings around the park can never be guaranteed, so if you want to be sure of seeing some animals, make your way to Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Wildlife Park, next to the Rust de Winter Dam (35 minutes’ drive), which is home to lots of big cats, meerkats and bears as well as primates and colourful birds. For different ways to spend a day, you could go zipping through the trees at Adventure Zone Cullinan (45 minutes), get a taste of historic mining life at McHardy House Museum (50 minutes) or sign up to see some of the scenery from above on a helicopter, skydiving or hot air balloon trip.
