  • Remote farm site with woodland views in central Slovakian countryside
  • Hiking direct from the farm; Low Tatras National Park an hour’s drive
  • Off-grid pitches with livestock nearby and seasonal produce available
If you’re looking to get far, far away from your fellow man and have a truly off-grid wild camping adventure, Farma pod Vlciu is the spot for you. At 20 minutes’ walk from the sleepy settlement of Červeňany in rural central Slovakia, this peaceful woodland site really is off the well-trodden tourist path. The owner is creating a sustainable farm on the property, with more than 500 fruit trees planted in the orchard, vegetable gardens and spectacular views down the valley to forested hills. There’s plenty of space for you to pitch up wherever you want, and while a hot camp shower can be provided, there are no toilets or electric showers – or indeed any electricity – so come prepared to fend for yourself. You’ll be surrounded by nature here, and probably sharing your pitch with the free-range hens, sheep and goats, who will undoubtedly come to say hello. Depending on the season, farm produce is sometimes available for you to use in your cooking – anything from vegetables and fruit to goat’s milk and cheese, or local honey. For all your other food needs, there’s a supermarket in Stará Huta (15 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

When you’re just chasing simple pleasures like strolling in the forest and reconnecting with nature, you can do exactly that directly from your pitch. You can also go hiking in the hills around Vígl’ašská Huta-Kalinka (20 minutes’ drive), or up the adrenaline levels with a go on the challenging via ferrata climbing course above the Hron river (40 minutes). To slow the pace somewhat, there’s an outdoor swimming complex in Hriňová (half an hour) with gorgeous woodland views and a playground. If you fancy a day of urban exploring, Banská Bystrica (55 minutes) has a handsome baroque-era centre; its central square is lined with cafés and overlooked by a pastel-hued (and leaning) clock tower. Close by is a medieval castle with city views from its ramparts and the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising, telling the story of 20th-century Slovak history in a Brutalist-style building. Banská Bystrica is also the gateway to hiking and mountain biking in the Low Tatras National Park, as well as skiing at resorts like Šachtičky (both around an hour).
