Take a trip to Camping Enigma, a top-notch transit site dotted with flowers and set amid the open fields and distant mountains of Serbia’s smashing south. Soak up the scenery from the outdoor pools, following up dips with meals of homemade Serbian specialities and Mediterranean food in the park’s garden restaurant.
A 10-minute drive from Vranje and the main E-75 road, this park is still far enough away from larger urban areas for a hol in peaceful, natural surrounds. It’s safe as well as serene – there’s a 24-hour security guard service, video surveillance and the whole complex is closed and locked in the evenings until the next morning.
The daytime’s your chance to check out the local area. The site organises tours around Vranje’s Ottoman architecture and thermal springs – parts of which are said to have the hottest water temperature in Europe – as well as Vlasina lake’s floating islands, the Monastery of Venerable Prohor of Pčinja and the BC-era archaeological site of Kale-Krševica.
After being whisked back to the park, it might be time to tackle all those tasks you’ve been putting off? If so, the site has essential facilities like a washing-up area, a laundry and chemical waste disposal.

Local attractions
Wander around the Ottoman architecture of Vranje (10 minutes’ drive), including the Pašin Konak mansion and the Turkish hammam, as a warmup to longer tours of the impressive Kale-Krševica archaeological site (20 minutes), an old fortified Ancient Macedonian town stretching across four hectares of land.
The Monastery of Venerable Prohor of Pčinja (40 minutes) is another architectural attraction to amble around, an 11th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery at the base of Mount Kozjak. Hike up to the area’s highest peak afterwards, the 1284-metre Virovi, or opt for a leisurely stroll around Vlasina Lake (an hour and five minutes) instead.
This body of water is an attractive place for a walk – as well as being surrounded by pastureland and birch forests, the lake is sprinkled with naturally occurring peat floating islands.
Explore the landscape (or brave the water), then make a break for North Macedonia’s border (35 minutes) to experience the customs and culture of another Balkan nation. The Katlanovo Thermal Bath, one of the country’s most renowned spas, makes an excellent stop-off (an hour). From here, it’s about 25 miles to Skopje, the nation’s capital, which is famed for having the Balkans’ biggest old bazaar.
