  • Rural site among mountains, with pitches among walnut trees
  • Under a kilometre from Sarmizegetusa and 15 minutes from Hateg
  • Play area, pétanque, barbecue and communal kitchen
Just look at that lake. These watery surroundings, as well as the trout fishing of the mighty and meandering Danube, are within simple day trip distance of Romania's Camping Zamolxe – with mountains and paragliding to tackle for energetic and adventurous types too. Among mountains and close to the old Hunedoara village of Sarmizegetusa, Camping Zamolxe is a rural site with pitches among walnut trees with the sound of local wildlife all around. It's 15 minutes' drive north east from here to Hateg, and just over an hour west to Caransebes at the confluence of the Timiș and Sebe rivers. The site has paved roads and good facilities including a play area, pétanque, a communal kitchen, a barbecue area and free wifi; there's also a roomy garden with a drinking water fountain. Toilets, showers with hot water, a drying room and a bath are all on site. If mountain treks or paragliding don't get your heart racing (in the good way), plenty of placid options are around here too, such as foraging for local mushrooms, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries, or making certain of foodie finds at the shops and restaurants of Sarmizegetusa, just under a kilometre away.

Local attractions

Tours of all sorts start from the site: ask the team what's on offer and make it your mission to get out to as many as possible during your stay. One such day trip is to Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa (an hour and a half's drive), the capital and biggest city of Roman Dacia and eight kilometres from Tapae on the Iron Gates of Transylvania. The remains of the Roman amphitheatre still stand here, along with temples, a citadel, the city forum and a gladiator school: toga fans should most certainly make their way here. A museum is at the site too for delving into more. Also have a day out to Malaiesti Fortress, half an hour away, one of the many old landmarks in the Hateg region and the Retezat mountains, and to the famed Transylvanian monastery of Prislop (35 minutes), at the foot of the Parâng mountains.
