  • Peaceful, secluded site with gorgeous mountain views
  • A five-minute drive from Roșia Montană’s Roman and mining museums
  • Plenty of space to relax on site; easy access to hikes and bike trails
Mountain views by day, glittering starry skies by night… and all of it with a fragrance of the pine trees that surround you – doesn’t that just sound like a splendid place to spend one or a few nights? If you’re nodding in agreement, then make your way to Majestic Lake Campsite, in a scenic rural spot just over a kilometre from the village of Roșia Montană. This is a place where you can really slow down, soak up the views of the snow-capped peaks, listen to birdsong and fill your lungs with fresh mountain air. In short, just take a bit of a retreat from everyday life. There are various good spots around the site where you can put your feet up – the swing seat is a particular favourite, and there are also covered picnic tables so you can dine outside even on damp days. Would you like a closer look at some of the scenery? That’s easily done, since there are plenty of places to get out for hikes and mountain-bike rides, or days of trout fishing in crystal-clear streams. If the kids don’t share your enthusiasm for hours of chilling out, that’s okay, too – they can entertain themselves at the playground or log on to the wifi. Mind you, with all this gorgeous nature around, it’s possible they may just want to put the screens away for a while…

Liked: This is a wonderful place. The surroundings are beautiful, and the camping area is attractive and characterful - dogs, cats, pigs and a magnificent cockerel set the tone. It’s run by mother and daughter Simona and Georgiana and they welcomed us warmly and attentively. If you want somewhere small, quiet, rural and hospitable, this is it. Basic facilities but clean. Nearby Rosia Montana is also a magical place - a UNESCO protected site, plus a gold mine that was established in Roman times and is still not fully excavated: the guided tour is fantastic. Highly recommended!

Disliked: Access is by a narrow unmade road that will be tricky for wide caravans and big motorhomes, but don’t let that put you off. It’s worth the effort!

Local attractions

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021, the Museum of Mining and the Roman Galleries in Roșia Montană (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk) is an underground gold mining complex that dates back to at least the second century, when the Romans occupied this area. Within a 10-minute drive of the site are several artificial lakes created to serve the local mining industry. They include Tăul Mare, in a valley surrounded by spectacular woodland; Tăul Brazi, a popular spot for fishing and wild swimming; and Tăul Țarinii, at close to 1,000 metres of altitude. Some of the gold mined at Roșia Montană, plus the tools to do so and other minerals and gemstones, has made its way to the Gold Museum Brad (one hour). Items here have been named after the shapes the gold ore has taken – for example, one resembles a ballerina and another a polar bear.
