When you can’t decide between a Portuguese beach holiday or time spent exploring historic Porto – home of port wine – there’s a very easy answer. Simply head for Kampaoh Praia de Angeiras. It’s steps away from a sandy beach, and an easy 20 minutes’ drive from the city, so you can mix and match days of seaside family fun with some urban sightseeing. Set in a quiet corner of the low-key fishing village of Praia de Angeiras, this tree-lined campsite has fully equipped – and pre-erected – accommodation in a range of sizes and styles with plenty of room for family and friends. All you need to do is rock up, claim your spacious tent and your holiday can begin. A good collection of on-site facilities includes a mini-market, restaurant and bar – both with barbecues – and a terrace overlooking the swimming pool and sun deck. In high season there’s a kids’ club to keep little minds happily occupied, and various entertainment organised for all age groups by the on-site team. Praia de Angeiras beach itself (five minutes’ stroll) is a pristine stretch of relatively quiet sand where you can swim in the Atlantic Ocean supervised by lifeguards in summer, and then tuck into fresh seafood in one of the relaxed seafront bars. If one beach is not enough, you have several more to choose from in the lively coastal town of Matosinhos (15 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

No visit to the magical city of Porto (20 minutes’ drive) is complete without visiting one of the port wine warehouses that sit along the River Douro – all tours wind up with a very welcome sampling session and the chance to buy some vintage port. Other hit-list city sights include the wonderfully ornate Palácio da Bolsa and – for art-lovers – the sleek Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves. If you’re visiting Porto in the evening, take a sunset stroll across the Gustave Eiffel-built Ponte de Dom Luis I bridge for views over red rooftops and then head to the pretty La Ribeira district to sample some traditional Portuguese cuisine. Round off your night listening to haunting ‘fado’ music in an old-world bar. Nicknamed the ‘Portuguese Rome’, enticing Braga (40 minutes) repays a day trip with cathedrals, churches, episcopal palaces and history museums. Be sure to see the baroque Bom Jesus do Monte (50 minutes) on Monte Espinho, where you can scale a monumental staircase (or cheat and take the funicular) up to the country’s most important pilgrimage church.
