When you’re feeling the need to escape city life for a Portugal hideaway, make a beeline for Camping Del Molino de Rodizio, less than five minutes’ drive from sleepy Sousela village in the region of Lousada. Here you can hide yourselves away on spacious pitches under the cooling shelter of mature trees – there’s only a handful of pitches so you’ll never feel crowded out.
Simple facilities include showers and a laundry room (a small amount of cash is required for the latter) with washing machine and drier. Barbecues are provided (pick up supplies in Sousela shops), and there are water points around the place, but no electricity so please remember to bring torches for late-night meanderings around the site.
Guests can borrow badminton nets and rackets, or settle down in the evening to play board games from the site’s library. There’s also a river a couple of minutes’ walk away, where you can swim and the kids paddle, and direct access to mountain footpaths right from the site.
The nearest railway station is eight km away, and the owners are happy to pick you up from there with prior notice and a small fee.

Local attractions
When you’re keen to stay active on your Portuguese holiday, you can have riding lessons or go out on treks from the local equestrian centre (five minutes’ drive), go swimming in the open air at Freamunde or play a round at Aviz Golf Club. There are also lots of hiking or cycling options on the trails through the Serra da Ermida (all 10 minutes) meadows and woodland.
There’s plenty of family fun to be had between the waterslides and splash fountains at Piscinas Scorpio, or you can tire youngsters out on the playground at Circuito de manutenção de S. João - Codessos (both half an hour). Here you can also take older kids on shaded walks through the cork forest.
More high-octane pursuits needed? Petrol-heads can follow courses of varying skill levels at Voltas de Rodas - Complexo Desportivo (five minutes), while hardcore mountain bikers test their abilities on steep courses at Pista de Downhill Sousela (10 minutes).
