  • Serene 40,000-square-metre park with a private freshwater beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Montargil and an hour and 40 to Lisbon
  • Fishing and wifi on site; watersports rental available nearby
Fan of floating? Fab news – there’s not one but two spots for swimming at Monte da Tojeirinha: off the private beach edging the Montargil Dam and in the outdoor swimming pool. If you’re hungry after a dip, even fabber news is that indoor and outdoor kitchens are available for cooking up meals at the site. Local restaurants serving up classic Portuguese fare are within a couple of miles as well and a supermarket is under a 10-minute drive away if you’ve an urge to stock up on snacks. Chomping on high-energy food is a must when staying here as there are ample activities to take part in at the dam, from cycling around the outskirts to canoeing on the water. Ask staff about renting equipment or seek out watersports schools close by organising high-thrills pursuits like wakeboarding. Fishing’s available for all the avid anglers out there as well. If you’d rather rest, stick around on site with a book and flick through the pages as you lie out on a picnic blanket under the big open skies. The park has plenty of room for spreading out – a whole 40,000 square metres of it to be exact. This family-friendly spot also has wifi, which is great if you’re in pottering around Portugal and often need access to the internet.

Local attractions

Into your history? The dolmens of the Montargil Megalithic Site are across the water (15 minutes’ drive) from the site, and the St Andrew Necropolis is nearby too for trips admiring ancient monuments. Apart from seeking out sights like these, a hol here is all about soaking up the scenery and having a go at the watery activities in the area – you could swim in the dam and fish by its banks or have a go at high-octane pursuits like windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing and jetskiing. If you’re craving busier places, Lisbon – Portugal’s cool capital – is an hour and 40 minutes’ drive away. Head here for topnotch attractions like the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Roman Theatre Museum and the Lisbon City Museum, then get up high in the hilly barrios (neighbourhoods) for memorable views over the downtown’s rooftops and the coast. This city’s also famed for its festivals, so chuck events like the Lisbon Book Fair, the MOTELx (Lisbon International Horror Film Festival) and the magic-themed Lisboa Mágica on your calendar. If you can’t make it out to Portugal for any of these, then make sure you at least experience a slice of Portuguese culture at one of the Fado music clubs in the centre.
