  • Smart family glampsite on the Atlantic coastline at São Pedro de Moel
  • Marinha Grande 15 minutes’ drive and surfing at Nazaré 25 minutes
  • Spacious tents shaded by trees; swimming pool and playground on site
Put yourselves in pole positions for Atlantic Ocean views… family-friendly glampsite Kampaoh São Pedro de Moel sits right on the Leiria coast, looking out over the sea a little way north of the village of São Pedro de Moel. If you're in the market for a stylish seaside break, this is the place to be – it’s a short (less than five minutes) walk along the clifftop promenade to the landmark Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse. It’s also pretty handy for a selection of sandy beaches for sunbathing, surfing and snorkelling in pristine seas, the closest being a mere 15 minutes’ walk away. This is the Atlantic coast, of course, so you may find the waves a little boisterous from time to time – if that's the case, you can guarantee a much calmer swim at the site's outdoor pool, with sun loungers all around for parents to multitask sunbathing and supervising swims. Other site amenities include a play area, a launderette and well-equipped bathrooms with hot showers to rinse off all that sand from the beach. Getting settled in here should be easy, as you’ll be moving into a spacious tent that's already kitted out with beds and other handy furnishings. They're all cleverly sheltered from the sun by the surrounding pine trees, and each one has a picnic table for leisurely meals eaten alfresco (pick up supplies at shops in the village).

Local attractions

Once you've seen the ocean from the site, no doubt you’ll want to get down for a closer look or to dive in. The closest beach is 15 minutes' walk away in São Pedro de Moel, and there are other lovely stretches to visit nearby like Praia Velha (half an hour's walk) or Praia das Pedras Negras (five minutes' drive). There are lots of places to surf along this coast (with surf schools and kit hire if needed), the most famed of which is Nazaré (25 minutes) where waves sometimes reach 30 metres. If you like to stretch your legs on a walk, you can wander along coastal paths nearby or head a little way inland to Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, which has 16 waymarked trails through its arid landscapes. Many of its sights lie below the surface, and you can see them at places like the Santo António caves (55 minutes). Pottering around along the coast to find beaches or walking trails is likely to fill much of your time around here, but you can also use this site as a base for day trips to places like Coimbra, Sintra or Lisbon (all within an hour and a half's drive).
