This tranquil, remote spot boasts a natural pool & great, clean restrooms. Guests loved the friendly owners & spacious, unmarked pitches. Fresh bread delivery was a hit. Some found it hard to locate, Wi-Fi spotty, & the pool chilly. One guest had boggy grounds & a closed reception.

Liked Very friendly and helpful site manager. An informal site with no demarcation between level pitches but plenty of room and nobody too close to each other. In a very attractive setting. Good, clean facilities. Fresh bread available every day. The nicest site we have stayed on so far.

Disliked Arrived to find reception closed 12pm-3pm parked up and the rains came down. Grounds were looking boggy couldn’t get out to find toilets, so left and found another site even though we had paid in full

From the manager: Hi Karen, we are very sorry that you chose the only campsite where the owners cannot control the weather in April. We apologize that you did not find the intercom for assistance and the note stating that you are welcome to find a spot yourself. Because of this you did not get to experience our paved camper terrace with a great view, our highly rated facilities with family showers, real toilets and minibar. We understand that this prevented you from writing an honest review, as others did. Anyway: we invite you to come back on another day of your choice to spend 'your' night. Pasteis de nata on the house :) Have a nice trip!

Disliked Mais un seul bloc sanitaire pour tout le camping. On nous dit qu’on peut s’installer n’importe où. Puis après 1h de montage de tente on nous dit qu’on doit aller plus loin. Dommage

From the manager: Yes; we let guests freely choose their own spot, whereby we appeal to the guests' own insight and responsibility; for example, that they do not pitch their tent too close to others or where vehicles or other guests must be able to pass. Apparently we made a mistake with this guest; apologies! If this responsibility is pointed out, there is no reason to give such sour comments, unlike others. Liked Great site in a great location, the host / owner was very funny and helpful.
Nice bread rolls & pastel de nata's delivered to site (if you order) from a local bakery. (nice extra) - lovely natural pool and clean facilities.

Stayed 3 nights and will be back again.

Local attractions

While you’re in this part of the country, a trip to the city of Coimbra, an hour’s drive from Quinta do Retiro, is a must. The former Portuguese capital is full of museums, galleries, monasteries and cathedrals and a lengthy exploration of its streets is warranted. If you can only do one thing in Coimbra though, make sure to visit the stunning Baroque library, Biblioteca Joanina, at the university – it’s like something out of a fairytale. Head to the Museu Monográfico de Conímbriga, just over an hour from the site, to learn about the Romans’ history in Portugal through mosaics, sculptures and everyday objects, and be sure to traipse through the grounds to see the Roman ruins… If the kids are bored of museums and libraries, entertain them at Parque Biologico Serra Lousã, a wildlife park and petting zoo an hour’s drive from the site, where they can see bears and reptiles, follow the maze of fruit trees and join in at feeding time. To get a proper feel for Portuguese life, take a trip to the scenic hillside villages of Piódão and Talasnal, or explore the markets of the Tábua and Arganil regions to stock up on Portuguese delicacies and pick up some souvenirs from among the wares of local craftspeople.
