It's free, quick and easy!
We are an off-grid riverside campsite in central Portugal where the emphasis is very much on socialising with fellow travellers and campers.
Gaio Camping is in the foothills of the Estrela Mountains. Lack of light pollution makes the night sky in this area spectacular. We have two 3m geodomes for rent and pitches for tents.
We are completely off grid with a large solar system and solar showers. Gaio is on a floodplain and so the whole site is dismantled and packed away for the winter. Much like a festival crew, we pack everything down and store it and clear the ground down to the last bottle top!
The site has been described as having a festival atmosphere.
The site is on the River Alva and includes a wildflower-covered meadow and a beautiful black walnut grove. The river is the perfect temperature for swimming and vital in the summer months to cool off.
We have a large kitchen/entertainment dome where we have regular live music and lots of laughter. Delicious meals can be booked in advance and breakfast is available every day.
Dogs are more than welcome.

Local attractions
The nearest city to our site is Coimbra, known as the 'Oxford of Portugal' and the oldest university city in Europe.
The Estrela Mountains are rugged and covered in pine and eucalyptus. Forestry tracks ensure you can get virtually everywhere 'off-road' and there are 4x4 tours and canoeing down the river with a guide both available.
We find that guests stay on site for the most part, as there is always something happening in the big dome.
We like our guests to meet each other and we encourage mingling, believing that a camping holiday is made by the folk who meet round the campfire.
