  • Casual restaurant, play area, yoga sessions and rum distillery on site
Wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys and toucan calls, then take a revitalising dip in the river…surrounded by a tropical rainforest an hour’s drive away from Panama City, nature-seeking guests are likely to find a wildlife haven in Selina Kalu Yala. A remote, modern eco-camp all geared up for sustainability, this dog-friendly site is based 35 minutes’ drive from Pacora and suited for finding your zen in the rainforest. Make your nest in one of the palm-fringed tipis nattily kitted out with comfy beds and simple furniture, and shaded by the trees. There are amenities blocks to hand, as well as the site’s laidback, alfresco restaurant with a farm-to-table menu. When you’re done exploring the natural swimming holes and nature reserves around and about, there’s plenty to do back on site. Kids can run off any surplus energy in the play area while adults may want to sample the drinks at the rum distillery. Perhaps stretching out your limbs with a sunset vinyasa yoga and meditation workshop might be another great way to unwind after a long day of adventure? Need to stay productive on the road? If you really have to work, the high-speed wifi is powered by an innovative, eco-friendly solar-power system so that you’ll stay green-fingered even while you work.

Local attractions

Down for some wild swimming in the rainforest? Take a dunk in a natural swimming hole (10 minutes’ walk). Further away, more water awaits at the peaceful Bayano Lake (an hour and a half). Canoe or kayak your way over lake, go below ground into the Bayano Caves and finish up with a meal of tilapia fish fresh from the lake. For some eco-friendly haunts, head into the cloud forests at Reserva Natural Cocobolo (10 minutes’ drive) for wildlife spotting. Conquer the walking trails at La Mesa (20 minutes). Then, cross over river bridges in the cool mountain reserve at Los Altos de Cerro Azul (one hour and 10 minutes). If you're up for more hikes, the trails through the Camino de Cruces National Park (an hour) may seem to go on forever. See lakes and lagoons, waterfalls and titi monkeys along your way. For more national parks, head over to Mirador de Cerro Azul (one hour and five minutes), Parque Nacional Soberanía (one hour and 15 minutes) or Parque Nacional Chagres (an hour and 15 minutes) for more ripe walking grounds. In Panama City's historic centre (an hour), hire bikes to pedal around the metropolitan natural park, hop off at heritage sites and museums and then cross over the Panama Canal to the Biomuseo in Panama Bay.
