  • Family holiday park bordering the Waianakarua River in North Otago
  • A 15-minute drive to Moeraki Boulders; Blue Penguin Colony 20 minutes
  • Farm animals on site; communal kitchen, dining room and lounge
Feel like losing yourself among rare specimen trees on a 25-acre farm? At forested Riverside Haven Lodge and Holiday Park, you’re bordering the Waianakarua River in North Otago, and you can wake up to the sound of birdsong, go wild swimming off the beach backed by cliffs, or escape on foot – any doggy guests can accompany you on your adventures – into the surrounding hilly landscapes. A stay at neatly landscaped Riverside Haven Lodge also puts you close to Oamaru (20 minutes’ drive), known for its historic buildings, penguin colony and 19th-century architecture that has seen the town become the hub of New Zealand steampunk, as well as the bizarre spherical boulders scattered on Moeraki beach (15 minutes). Riverside Haven has plenty of wide-open space, with a playground for youngsters and lots of cuddly farm animals for them to befriend. And talking of the kids, family-friendly facilities include a full laundry facility, shared toilets and a shower block, plus a communal kitchen, dining room and lounge in case the weather isn’t playing nicely, and a communal firepit for days when it is. There’s also a huge magazine and book collection on tap, and plenty of information on this scenic corner of South Island, including a guide to the best restaurants in the area.

Local attractions

Go fishing in the Waianakarua River edging the holiday park, start your exploration of the area in Herbert Forest, or discover further afield by bike. Follow a couple of sections of the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail through some of South Island’s most spectacular scenery, which passes through Oamaru (20 minutes’ drive) on its way north towards Aoraki – also known as Mount Cook. Birdwatching aficionados can visit the Blue Penguin Colony near Oamaru – best seen in the evening when the penguins come in from the sea. During the day, tours are available to see penguins in their nesting boxes. To see more of these comical penguins, visit the Yellow-eyed penguin breeding site at Moeraki (15 minutes), the largest colony in North Otago. Walk from Moeraki Lighthouse down to Katiki Point (both 20 minutes), where fur seals get together for a spot of basking in the sun. While you’re at Moeraki, be sure to see the bizarre boulders on the beach. All are of different sizes, with some weighing several tonnes. Thought to be up to 65 million years old, you can wander freely among them, or check them out from the café and gift shop overlooking the sand.
