With 54 acres of parkland to call home, Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park backs Nelson’s sandy Tāhunanui Beach for roughly half a mile. Wherever you lay your head on this family-friendly campsite overlooking the Tasman Bay, you have direct access to the beach and all its attractions. Life is certainly made easy for families staying on site, with a TV lounge, shared kitchens and multiple barbecue areas. If alfresco dining is not on your holiday schedule, just head to the Deck Café just off the reception area, which is open all day, every day for fresh coffee, fry-ups and essentials like milk and bread. Kids will never have a dull moment either, what with five different playgrounds to choose between, plus the giant bouncing castle, a mini-golf course, pétanque courts, go karts, a mega swing… You get the picture, but if that’s not enough, the porcupines and rare kākā parrots at Natureland Wildlife Trust (10 minutes’ walk) may do the trick and keep everyone entertained.

Liked: Location was fantastic in green zone, with beach view. Adequate toilets, showers & BBQ areas close by. Quiet. Access to bike hire.

Classic Studio hotel or motel (no pets, five person)

Liked: we recently stayed at one of the motels and found them a good size with a Comfortable Queen size bed and the unit was well maintained, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is a great place to stay close to the water and with a good walkway next to it would recommend it to others plus would go back again. Plenty to do there plus it is close to the Airport .there is Bike rental at the camp so leave the car at home

Local attractions

Keen cyclists can get straight onto the off-road Great Taste Trail outside The Deck Tāhuna, and follow it all the way to Māpua (five hours by bike), stopping off at vineyards on the way. With direct access from the holiday park, Tāhunanui is a safe and family-friendly swimming beach. Kitesurfers should head for the western end of the sand and wait for the afternoon’s sea breeze. To see some local wildlife, take the kids on a nature walk in Waahi Taakaro Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), or see native bird species like kiwis and kākās flourishing in the safety of The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary (20 minutes). If you fancy having a potter around Nelson (five minutes’ drive), first stop may be the Nelson Classic Car Museum, packed with vintage Jaguars, Ferraris and Cadillacs. Learn more about regional history with a walking tour of the historic buildings in Founders Heritage Park (10 minutes), or stop off at one of the town’s many vineyards and craft breweries for a taste of local wines or beers.
