  • Family-friendly site on the island of Tholen
  • Heated outdoor pool, playground and restaurant
  • Activities for all ages arranged in high season
Doesn't this green Dutch-based site look just tiptop? And even more fably, it's on an island too – the wildlife and cycling haven of Zeeland's Tholen, the peninsula of two isles separated by the bay of Krabbenkreek. Your scenic and peaceful berth can be bedded down in after active days in the site surroundings, as Camping de Gorishoekse Hoeve is in the Oosterschelde or Eastern Scheldt region, a part of the Nethlerlands famed for its outdoor activities on water and land. The Oosterschelde makes up the biggest national park in the country too, so get prepped for easy access to biking, hiking, nature spotting, sailing and scuba diving among its saltwater, mudflats and meadow surroundings. The leisure facilities back at base are plentiful: start your leisurely self off with a splash in the big pool with waterslide (a site just isn't a site without a pool, opine the wise team), then take your damp offspring along to see the Gorishoek rabbits, chickens, goats, ducks and pot-bellied pigs at the site zoo. From Mondays to Saturdays, kids can go along to the Beachcomber space, to meet up with the team tasked with junior entertainment. Activities for adults are available too on weekdays during high season. Food to suit all ages is at Smaek, the small site restaurant serving meals from breakfasts to dinners, including what one former guest says was the best plate of chips and salad she's ever had...

Local attractions

The site is on the island of Tholen, in the middle of the Oosterschelde, an area of the Zeeland region known for its vast landscapes, cycling and watersports. The 370 square kilometres of the national park include around 125 kilometres of shoreline, making up salt waters famed for scuba diving because of the number of species unique to the region. You could also go sailing or hiking, seek porpoises among the park's creeks and mudflats, or take a guided tour to forage for shellfish including mussels, oysters and periwinkles (all are plentiful in the area, but a license is needed to gather them). Other recommended options are to cycle, hike or horse ride around the Brabantse Wal, the sandy plateau running along the Zeeland border and the Belgian province of Antwerp. Or drive for just under an hour to reach other the popular watersports spots in the region of the Veerse Meer lagoon and the town and waters of Kamperland. The city of Bergen op Zoom, one of the oldest in the Netherlands, is about 20 kilometres away.
