  • Small, quiet and green site aimed at families
  • By the Geul river and at the foot of the Keutenberg
  • Luxury safari tents, bar with terrace, playground and pizza takeaways
Teenies will go gaga for this site. (As will their owners: Camping De Gronselenput is on car-free terrain, so nicely safe for small sorts to run around in.) As will cyclists, nature spotters, hikers, city sightseers and those who like a good lot of luxury with their Netherlands breaks: settle yourself down in a safari tent here for holidays of all flavours. Quiet and scenic, Camping De Gronselenput is at the foot of the Keutenberg, the steepest hill in the Netherlands. Its green setting is bordered by the Geul river (keep your observant eyes peeled, for here be beavers), in a tiptop starting point for Limburg hikes and bike rides. Urban outings are easily sorted too, with easy access to days out at Valkenburg, Maastricht and Heerlen, or across the border into Germany or Belgium at Aachen and Liège. Local village Wijlre is a couple of kilometres away, reachable via a pretty meadow stroll. There's plenty of space to wander at this uncrowded place whether you want to find your own serene spot by the water, or bag bread or a pizza at De Gronselenput's shop to sort alfresco eating at the site picnic tables. Getting active, table tennis, volleyball and a playground are all around for guests' use, and regular entertainment and activities are held in high season. All safari tents are fully furnished, with a living area, two bedrooms and a mobile kitchen for cooking indoors or out. Other communal facilities on site include a bar and cosy terrace.

Local attractions

De Gronselenput is at the foot of the Keutenberg, the steepest hill in Holland and a popular biking spot for those strong of leg (it's on the route of the Amstel Gold Race: bike along to the finish line on top of the Cauberg if you're feeling particularly energetic). Local village Wijlre is one of the many bases in this peaceful south Limburg countryside for hiking and cycling; route ideas and leaflets are at the village's Cafe a gen Baan. More gently, have an amble around the village to see its 17th-century manor house and handsome gardens of Wijlre Castle, snap pics at the pretty 14th-century watermill, or drop in for a tour and tipple at Brand bier brouwerij, the oldest beer brewery in the Netherlands. Taking to the car, it's 20 minutes from here to Valkenburg, 35 to Maastricht or Aachen, and 50 minutes to Liège.
