  • Family-friendly site close to the Germany and Belgium borders
  • Local nature reserve within a short walk; 50 minutes' drive to Aachen
  • Recreational lake, indoor pool, bicycle rental and varied restaurants
A trip to the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium all at once? That might sound impossible, but EuroParcs Limburg is in what’s called the ‘green waist of Limburg’, the narrowest part of the Netherlands… and it’s just five minutes’ drive from the German border and 15 minutes’ drive from Belgium, which is on the other side of the river Meuse. This family-friendly site knows its location is special, and it pays homage to that with a number of half-timbered houses across the site (in a nod to Limburg’s half-timbered houses) and Belgian-style Flemish fries or Limburg flan up for grabs in the eateries in the site’s ‘village square’. The site’s naturally formed pond isn’t just there for decoration, although it certainly looks very pretty. You’re also welcome to swim and play in the shallows. If you don’t fancy getting your hair wet that day, just get your walking boots on or rent a bicycle from the site and get out to the green nature reserve in the IJzerenbosch (45 minutes’ walk or 10 minutes’ cycle). You might just spot a tree frog in the grasslands, field or forest… In Susteren, the local town (and a historic one at that), stroll past the old white houses and pick a spot to lounge in the square on the Marktstraat (10 minutes). The Sint-Amelbergabasiliek (10 minutes) church is the burial place of a medieval king named King Swentibold. Susteren is packed out with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, shops and all sorts of eateries, but you’ll also be pleased to find that EuroParcs Limburg has its own selection of amenities, including restaurants and a shop. Entertainment-wise, there’s also bicycle rental, a playground, indoor swimming pool, waterslide, animal meadow, kids’ club and toddlers’ pool.

Local attractions

Perhaps begin by crossing over the Belgium border… Maasmechelen (35 minutes’ drive) is a hot bargain-hunting destination with over 100 boutiques. If you’re more of a wildlife seeker, Hoge Kempen National Park (40 minutes) might be top of your list. Whether it’s forests, fens, heathland or castle, and hiking or mountain biking, you’ll be in for a treat. In Germany, there are plenty of historical sites around Aachen (50 minutes) – the replica crown jewels in the city hall, the huge spires of the cathedral and many museums. Just a little further on, there’s yet another wildlife haven. A hike in Eifelsteig (55 minutes) will get you to waterfalls and mountains (just decide how far you’d like to go, as the Eifelsteig is 313 kilometres long).
