Roaming about in nature is a cinch from here – you can hit cycle paths and walking trails directly from the site and launch boats from the little marina to head out into the canals and beyond to lakes such as the Langweerderwielen. Should you prefer to stick to dry land, there’s a golf course a 15-minute bike ride away, or the folks on site can provide you with ideas for bike routes ranging from 10 to 40 kilometres long. If it’s warmer waters you seek, there’s a subtropical waterpark in Joure, 10 minutes’ drive from the site, with a wave pool, toddler pool, waterslides and a whitewater course. On less clement days or if you fancy a break from the outdoorsy activities, there are several museums in the area that are worth a trip – the maritime-themed Fries Scheepvaart Museum and National Model Railway Museum in Sneek, the arty Belvédère Museum and the UNESCO-listed D F Wouda Steam Pumping Station are all about 25 minutes away by car.
