It's free, quick and easy!
- Rental tents on a wooded park two kilometres from Odoorn
- A 15-minute drive from Emmen and Wildlands Adventure Zoo
- Outdoor swimming pool, playground and summer horse and carriage rides
They’re clever types at Camping 't Vlintenholt – they’ve cleverly noted that some folk aren’t in possession of all the kit for an outdoor break... or can’t be bothered to wrangle all the relevant bits into place.
Taking note of these needs, the team here has sup a clutch of smart rental tents, where almost all kit is in place – comfy beds, furniture and a kitchen stacked with everything from a fridge freezer and stove all the way down to a pizza cutter. All that remains for you to do is bag up some bed linen and stash a selection of smalls, shorts and swimwear in a suitcase before setting off.
It’s a clever location here too: a wooded site surrounded by Drenthe greenery and a couple of kilometres from the little town of Odoorn. If you’ve brought bikes, pedal off for pancakes, shops and restaurants in the town centre 10 minutes or so away, or pick up maps of locals’ fave cycle routes to take in some of the scenery. For city strolls, it’s a 15-minute drive to Emmen; eagle-eyed kids may just note that it’s also home to one of the country’s finest attractions in the Wildlands Adventure Zoo.
There’s plenty to keep the kids happy on site too, such as an pool, a playground, woods to run around and a programme of summer activities including the chance to ride like royalty in a horse-drawn carriage.

Local attractions
What a nifty spot this is for family friendly outings: depending on their ages and tastes, kids may find much to chuckle at on a wander around Kabouterland gnome-themed amusement park (10 minutes’ drive), or they might prefer the rides and attractions (including pony rides for the wannabe horse handlers and a water play area for warmer days) at Drouwenerzand amusement park (15 minutes).
There’s also plenty to pack a day with at Wildlands Adventure Zoo (15 minutes), where visitors go on a journey through four different themed habitats to spot a collection of creatures from all corners of the planet. Looking to swap the lion’s roar for a race car roar? Set off for the fast-paced world of the TT circuit in Assen (25 minutes).
If you're on hol to take in some 20th-century history, Camp Westerbork (25 minutes) is a history museum and memorial on the site of a World War II concentration camp. For a contemplative stroll afterwards, the open spaces of Drents-Friese Wold National Park are half an hour away.
