  • Small-scale family site five minutes’ drive from Aalden in Drenthe
  • Golf club 10 minutes’ walk and Hunebedcentrum 25 minutes’ drive
  • Play barn and recreation area with a trampoline; pony-and-trap rides
Not a fan of big, bustling and impersonal campsites? Minicamping Aelderveen should be just the job for you then. Set on the road between the villages of Aalden and Witteveen in Drenthe, it’s a peaceful and (as its name suggests) small-scale, child-friendly campsite with stunning views over open countryside. ‘Mini’ doesn’t mean nothing to do on site, however; there’s no organised entertainment for the kids but they can keep themselves very happily busy for days in the play barn – it has a ball pit, air-hockey table, mini football, a dolls’ corner and budding bricks. Outside there’s a playground with a trampoline and sandpit, as well as go-karts and bikes for older children, while horse-mad guests can take riding lessons, go for a hack or enjoy a pony-and-trap ride along quiet tree-lined lanes. There are walking and cycling routes from the pitches, a golf course within 10 minutes’ walk and a swimming lake about 15 minutes away on foot. If a day of rest is required after all that activity, you can borrow books from the on-site library. Cooking-wise, firepits and barbecues are permitted on site, and you can jazz up your meals with free veg or herbs from the picking garden. Stock up at the bakery and supermarket in Aalden (five minutes’ drive), which also has pizzerias and takeaways.

Local attractions

First stop for the kids? They’ll jump at the chance of a day at Kuierpad swimming lake (15 minutes’ drive), where paddleboards and kayak can be hired to explore the shoreline. There’s also an outdoor pool in Zweeloo (five minutes) with an inflatable climbing course for youngsters. Golfers can hone their handicap on the greens and fairways of the local club (10 minutes’ walk). Non-golfer? Jump on your bike to explore the peat bogs, heathland and ancient forests of Drenthe, or head for the historic village of Sleen (20 minutes by bike) to check out its decoratively designed red-brick houses and church with a soaring grey slate spire. Learn how the people of Drenthe lived in times past at the Ellert en Brammert open-air museum (15 minutes’ drive), where farm buildings, schools, cottages – including one with a roof made of turf – and manor houses have been painstakingly reconstructed. Step even further back in time at Hunebedcentrum (25 minutes), a heritage museum featuring detailed dioramas of neolithic settlements – it’s also home to one of the biggest dolmens in The Netherlands.
