  • Spacious and peaceful site five minutes' drive from Hezingen
  • A 10-minute drive from Ootmarsum, with rural paths all around
  • Bootcamp sessions, horse rides and sociable meals available on site
Fancy green countryside with the potential for forays into northwestern Germany? Hoeve Springendal is in a rural location, a five minutes' drive from Hezingen and a short drive from the border. This part of the world is known as the 'Garden of the Netherlands’, and rightly so – it’s a fab place for outings on foot or by bike, taking in forests, streams and heathland along the way. Traditional life is well preserved around these parts, so keep an eye out for native breeds of cattle and sheep, draft horses working the fields and chickens pecking underfoot. Several villages nearby make excellent places for pitstops, too – all in all, Overijssel's a most rewarding place to explore. Not enough exercise? Guests at Hoeve Springendal can sign up for bootcamp sessions three times a week, sort horse riding outings or set up for various games on the sports field. Downtime can be spent playing pétanque, borrowing a book or game from the on-site collection or accompanying the kids to the playground or petting zoo (where they can make friends with the critters by offering a hand with feeding). Dogs are also welcome. Freshly cooked breakfasts are available to buy every day, and guests can also pick up drinks and pastries to get them going of a morning. Twice a week, guests gather at a long table for sociable dinners showcasing local goodies.

Local attractions

Get outdoors at Springendal nature reserve, a wildlife hub that can be reached in five minutes by bike. For further rural sights, head to De Molen van Frans, a handsome traditional windmill (five minutes' drive) or Mosbeek Valley nature reserve (10 minutes). Keen to learn more about local life? Make tracks for the Veenmuseum (25 minutes) to get clued up about all manner of local traditions. Ootmarsum (10 minutes) is another great spot in the immediate vicinity: stroll through this town's cobbled medieval streets, admire the half-timbered houses or sit back with a drink on a terrace and listen to the church bells. Tubbergen (15 minutes) has similar historic vibes and is well worth a visit, as is Bad Bentheim (45 minutes), over the German border and far-famed for its castle and flea market. For kid-pleasing times, drive 10 minutes to the local observatory and take in the cosmos, or cross over into Germany to survey the fearsome birds and beasts at the local zoo (25 minutes).
