It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful and well-equipped site in a wooded part of the countryside
- A 10-minute drive to Winterswijk quarry and 15 to Winterswijk town
- Swimming pool, restaurant, playgrounds, bike rental and go-karting
Let the kids loose on the family-friendly facilities at Camping en Recreatiecentrum de Italiaanse Meren, a well-equipped park in a wooded section of the rural Achterhoek region of the Netherlands, and you might not see them again till supper…
With so much to get stuck into in this spot just around the corner from Germany, it could be tricky for them to find the time to have a go on everything. There’s a large playground (and a handful of smaller ones), an outdoor swimming pool with a separate paddling pool, tennis courts, table tennis tables and go-karts to try out.
If that sounds far less serene than the trip you’re planning, a swimming lake for gentle dips and a fishing pond where guests might like to catch a couple of fine specimens means it’s easy to dial down the excitement. A terrace is set up just off the restaurant for chilled-out drinks and there’s ample space to spread out on the grass while the kids play.
Guests on the go, meanwhile, might like to pick up fries and pizza from the snack bar and snack tent or grab sandwiches for breakfast and head off into Winterswijk, the nearest town (25 minutes’ cycle ride away) on a bike hired from the park. For walks, Winterswijk Quarry is a 10-minute drive and the Korenburgerveen peat bogs are 20 minutes away.

Local attractions
While on a hol in Holland, a bike comes in handy for speeding off towards sites like the Winterswijk Quarry (10 minutes’ drive). Ditch your ride once you arrive and totter off on two feet around this scenic spot or churn up the dirt on a more challenging route, the 415-kilometre Noaberpad walking path just outside of Winterswijk (10 minutes).
In town, a well-known market crops up on Wednesdays and Saturdays, plus a pool with slides and a Turkish steam bath’s also open most of the week. Culture vultures could head to the former home of artist Piet Mondrian to see an exhibition of his earlier works, while kids might prefer pootling around the area’s petting zoo.
For those travelling without any nippers, a voyage to Vineyard Hesselink (15 minutes) for vino is a fab way to spend an afternoon. A variety of other activities are available locally, too – from trips to the Rosenhaege Living Gardens, five minutes, for botanical buffs to World War II-themed tours of the National Onderduikmuseum (10 minutes).
Done with the Netherlands? Germany’s right next door for trips to the city of Bocholt (half an hour) and the Bahia Erlebnisbad indoor waterpark (25 minutes).
