  • Kid-friendly site between two spectacular national parks in the Veluwe
  • Zoo, aquarium, museum and theme park all less than 40 minutes' drive
  • Outdoor pools, restaurant, bar, shop and champagne breakfasts to order
Ah, the Veluwe… the splendid slice of the Netherlands that has the biggest sand drifts in Europe, landscapes of all sorts for outdoor pursuits of all types, and enough family-friendly attractions to keep even the most stubbornly sulky entertained for days: zoos, a monkey park, an amusement park and the most mammoth marine park on the entire continent at Dolfinarium. The porpoises, seals, sea lions and other marine crew of Dolfinarium are within 45 minutes' drive of the kid-friendly site of Veluwecamping 't Schinkel, in the Veluwe just under three kilometres from the Gelderland village of Hoenderloo. The site is sandwiched between two spectacular national parks – the Hoge Veluwe and Veluwezoom – and is around 20 minutes from both the Apenheul monkey park and the Julianatoren amusement park. The paddling pool on site has its own waterslide and jet (the latter presided over by a mischievous-looking monkey). The playground with slide, shelter, swing and low rope bridge on a safely sandy surface should also be a hit, as should the rope climbs and slides of the fine play area indoors, the roomy play area with sandpit to get stuck into, and the summer entertainment programme packed with kid-friendly activities. And as for grownup concerns? Next to the paddling pool is the main outdoor pool and sun loungers alongside, and a restaurant and takeaway are at your foodie disposal too. You can also start the day off with a fizz by booking champagne, bread and croissants for your leisurely adult brekkie the next morning: eager requests for these can be received at reception the day before.

Local attractions

In under 45 minutes by car you can reach the Apenheul monkey park, the Julianatoren amusement park, Royal Burgers' Zoo and Dolfinarium, or in even less time you can be right in the middle of either of the site's neighbouring national parks for mountain biking, horse riding, cycling and nature spotting. The Hoge Veluwe National Park is also home to the Museonder, an underground museum inside the visitors' centre, and the Kröller-Müller, the acclaimed art museum with the second biggest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world (the biggest of all is of course at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam). If your boots are made for walking, take one of the marked routes around the park, or pick up a guide from the visitor centre to take one of the four themed routes. Guided nature walks are available from the centre too if you book well in advance. The Netherlands Open Air Museum is 25 minutes' drive away at Arnhem.
