  • Sophisticated East Netherlands site in the Achterhoek countryside
  • A 45-minute drive to Gelderland; 10 minutes to the German border
  • Food and drink prepared; activities on site; cafés nearby
Touring the Netherlands on the lookout for cycle-easy landscapes and treetop trails? Perhaps tracks that take you straight through the woodlands below? Then settle down for a sophisticated stay at East Nomads in Aalten, 45 minutes' drive from Gelderland and 10 minutes from the German border, where you can fully unwind in style. With the convenience of fully-catered camping and the peace that comes with a stay in a wildlife haven, this site has been set up in a nature reserve in the Achterhoek countryside, meaning that you can meander as you please around local meadows, forests and streams. Leave the dicing and slicing up to the site, as all food and drink is prepared for you, meaning you have more time to contemplate sweet views of old barns and sloping farmland. And you may want to be prepared to dedicate some time to various activities run on site, if you wish. And when you feel like exploring the area for yourself, there is a tea garden within five minutes’ drive and plenty more pitstops in the centre of Aalten (an easy 10 minutes' drive) serving food, tea or the local beer of choice.

Local attractions

Get familiar with the treetops and amble between bridges, nets and zipwires at Climbing Achterhoek (25 minutes’ drive). Then, turn from monkey to water-paddler across the German border, where you can rent a canoe or kayak (15 minutes) and tackle the riverways by boat. Still on German soil, stop by Museum Wasserburg Anholt (20 minutes), a moat castle-turned-art museum with an intricate garden maze. Back over the border, The Land Jan Klaassen (20 minutes) harks back to an older time with Punch and Judy games, a puppet museum and theme park rides. Burger’s Zoo (40 minutes) has its very own indoor jungle and deserts full of wild animals, plus playgrounds for children to entertain their own wild side. Afterwards, visit the largest national park in Holland, National Park Veluwezoom (an hour and 20 minutes). It's slightly further to go, but this park is worth the journey for mountain biking, horse riding and hiking. Keep your eyes peeled for sneaky wild boar and red deer as you go.
