After a bit of adventure? Hankering for a high or thirsting for thrills? On the edge of the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, Autocamp Mlinski Potok has all the answers… This family-run site is clean, simple and easy on the eyes: just under 5,000 feet above sea level, it’s surrounded by the craggy peaks of the national park wilderness, and its flower-filled grounds are dotted with wooden buildings and old farm carts. Hiking paths into the hills, many of which tip the 7,500-foot mark, start from the site, while a five-minute drive away, the town of Žabljak is a centre for adventure sports and activities (as well as having a supermarket and various bars and eateries serving the distinctive cuisine of a small mountain nation with big, big appetites). You may get an early taste on arrival, as the proprietors of Autocamp Mlinksi Potok are partial to greeting guests with a glass of the local plum brandy. They don’t stop at warming tots either: as experts on the local area, they’ll happily point you towards the best trails and help you book activities like 4x4 safaris, horse riding or guided tours of the park.

Liked: The situation and view are very good, globally the place is charming with little sheppard houses, and the reception is very friendly. The showers have hot water, and toilets are in the occidental way. Very good standards for the country.

Liked: Der Platz befindet sich mitten in der Natur mit einem schönen Bergpanorama.

Disliked: Die Ausstattung des Platzes ist sehr schlecht. Wir sind mit einem Campervan angereist und mussten unser Stromkabel quer über den Platz legen, um an Elektrizität zu kommen. Über dieses Kabel sind täglich viele Autos gefahren. Die sanitären Einrichtungen haben wir nicht genutzt. Schmutzig, ungepflegt in einen, so wie es uns vorkam, einen alten Stall eingebaut. Die Spülküche ist gleichzeitig auch der Waschraum. Alles sehr provisorisch und nicht gut in Schuss. Die Anzahl der Duschen und Toiletten sind nicht ausreichend für die Menge der Gäste. Wlan gibt es nur direkt vor dem Wohngebäude der Betreiber, auf dem Platz aber nicht.Wir sind einen Tag eher als geplant abgereist.

Good sized pitch

Disliked: The shower block is not at all good. No loo paper. Dark toilets ( can’t see at night)
There is no sink to wash hands at all so people are leaving toilet with nowhere to wash hands which is unacceptably unhygienic.
There is a room with 6 cold water taps but this has to be where people wash hands after toilet ( if they bother), wash food, wash dirty dishes, brush teeth and wash clothes.
The campsite was too full so the hot water showers ran out quickly and we had to have a cold shower.
Lots of young people but to be fair the bar room meant that noise was not too bad.
I’d not recommend as a campsite for those with kids. It’s not family friendly. More suited to backpackers/ young travellers

Local attractions

In terms of stuff to do, the choice is between high or low, which applies to heart rates as much as altitude. If you’re a fan of white knuckle rides, try rafting down the Tara canyon, half an hour’s drive away, or zipwiring across the chasm (only 200 feet less deep than the Grand Canyon…), reaching speeds of 30 miles an hour. After that, your next adventure is chucking yourself off a mountain peak: paragliders do it from the top of Savin Kuk, a six-hour hike away, but there's a pleasant cable car ride for cheaters from the ski centre 15 minutes’ drive away. Those after easier times can sail up the peaks on the cable car and potter round the peaks, forests and meadows of the national park, looking out for peregrine falcons, golden eagles, European wildcats and maybe a wolf or two. Alternatively, circular yomps of around 8-10 hours start from Žabjlak up to the heights of Planinica and the park’s very tallest, Bobotov Kuk (the latter is best tackled by experienced climbers only). For walks with views, you can’t beat a trip to the Đjurđjevića bridge, spanning the Tara canyon at a seemingly impossible point, or trails around the nearest of the so-called ‘mountain eyes’, the glacial Black Lake (Crno jezero, 15 minutes' walk). It’s considered a bit chilly for some swimmers, so if you prefer beachy basking times to hikes and fishing, it’s a 20-minute trip to laze on the shores of smaller and warmer Devil’s Lake (Vražje jezero).
