  • Brdo Zelenika hiking area 10 minutes’ drive; Monastery Kom 40 minutes
  • Matica River watersports, bike rental and wine tours available on site
Laidback and leafy, Auto Camp Matica is on a family-owned vineyard in wine country 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Podgorica. What a handy stop this is, particularly for any city dwellers looking to get out into the countryside for a couple of nights, or indeed anyone just looking to chill in rural surroundings with mountain views. Not to mention Lake Skadar National Park is within half an hour’s drive… Should you be looking to get active, you can book canoeing, kayaking, horse riding and wine-tasting activities on site, and the owners can organise rafting and canyoning for adrenaline seekers on the Matica River (which becomes the Sitnica further towards Podgorica). If you’re looking to explore the area under pedal power, rent bicycles as well. Facilities on the spacious grass camping field include parking, simple showers (with reliable hot water), loos and dish-washing sinks at the side of the field. There’s a major shopping mall (20 minutes’ drive) on the outskirts of Podgorica if you need to stock up, and numerous country restaurants scattered across the area if you’d like to taste the fresh cheese and local meats and dishes like kacamak.

Local attractions

No need to go wandering off in search of something to sip upon, for Auto Camp Matica can organise wine tasting on the grounds – this is a family-owned vineyard, after all. Now, for hiking, you’ll probably want to wait until the wine has gone down smoothly. Brdo Zelenika (10 minutes’ drive) is a lush hiking area hardly far away at all. The same goes for activities such as horse riding (20 minutes) and angling at the local fishing lake (25 minutes). You’d never guess you were so close to the capital city of Montenegro here, either, but Podgorica (15 minutes) is indeed just a short drive away. Its clock tower, made by Turks, is worth seeing, along with the stone bridge. Just over on the other side of the city is Lake Skadar National Park, with beaches, hikes and wildlife like Dalmatian pelicans. Karuč (half an hour) is one of the closest spots, a lakeside village with delicious seafood. Monastery Kom (40 minutes) is based on one of the lake’s islands; it’s medieval, and totally stunning.
