  • Eco-friendly rural Umbria site with a focus on holistic lifestyle
  • A 40-minute drive from Città di Castello; hiking trails all around
  • Eco-friendly facilities and natural river pool for swimming
Ready for a bit of an adventure on your outdoor break? A stay at Val Aurava in Umbrien should provide a good bit of that – getting to this simple and quiet site requires guests to drive along seven kilometres of dirt road (not an easy task but one that's certainly doable as long as you take it slowly). In fact, slowing down is what this place is all about – owners Aurelio and Ava are keen believers in a holistic lifestyle and aim to develop their five-hectare rural Umbria site into a retreat with a focus on nature, relaxation and personal development (with a particular emphasis no the healing properties of music and sound). What this place offers for guests, then, is a real chance to escape from the trappings of modern life – there's very little internet here and you'll be asked to live by the eco-friendly rules of the site, such as using biological organic soap and avoiding the use of chemicals (unless you have your own grey water tank in your van). Facilities here are designed to fit in with that ethos as well – guests have access to a large communal house, a bathroom (with bath tub and toilet), an outdoor toilet and a shower wagon. There’s also a river close by where you can have a swim in a natural pool (but please don't use any suncream here as this pollutes the water). Simply relaxing on site is likely to fill much of your time here, but if you’d like a bit more activity you can get out and about on lots of hiking paths and downhill bike trails nearby. You'll be allowed barbecues and campfires back on site, but it's a good 40-minute drive to shops in Città di Castello so it's a good idea to stock up before arrival.

Local attractions

Part of the attraction of this place is the ability to do very little if you wish, although you should certainly bring along walking boots and/or mountain bikes if you'd like to see some more of the scenery as there are some lovely trails to follow nearby (ask Ava or Aurelio to point you in the direction of something suitable). If you're heading to Città di Castello (40 minutes’ drive) for supplies, make a trip of it by visiting the cathedral, admiring the art at the Pinacoteca Comunale and sipping a coffee at one of the cafés on Piazza Gabriotti. There are also some lovely places to eat in Umbertide (35 minutes), or you can seek out historic sights like Rocca d’Aria (40 minutes) and Montelovesco Castle (50 minutes).
