The photogenic remains of Gothic-style San Galgano Abbey (20 minutes) should also be on everyone’s bucket list. If the kids are keen for a day at the seaside, there are several sandy Tyrrhenian Sea options in the Parco Regionale della Maremma (40 minutes), which is also home to wild cattle and horses. Still in the park, the spectacular town of Grosseto (45 minutes) has well-preserved medieval walls and Massa Marittima (50 minutes) is dominated by its stunning 14th-century cathedral. When it’s time for some serious chilling after all the sightseeing, book a treatment or soak up the medicinal properties of the waters at Petriolo Thermal Baths (15 minutes).
