- Adults-only cabin in a forested sculpture park in the Tuscan hills
- Rosignano Marittimo 10 minutes’ drive; Livorno half an hour
- Private outdoor pool with views of the hills; fully equipped kitchen
Tuscany is regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance, and a holiday in this central Italian region is not complete without a little art on the side. Staying at Vacanza nel Bosco means you get your own private exhibition of contemporary artworks. This adults-only cabin sits within artist Franca Frittelli’s sculpture park in the forested foothills of the Apennines, a 10-minute drive from the Tyrrhenian coast and Rosignano Marittimo.
Shaded by tall Mediterranean pine trees, the cabin has a colourful kitchen/dining area with bamboo-themed upholstery and an undulating mosaic table resting on a tree stump. And it’s not a case of style over substance: the kitchen has everything you need to prepare a tasty meal (plus an espresso machine).
Thanks to the narrow vertical windows in the rainfall shower room you don’t have to miss out on the splendid natural views for a single minute. Then there’s the outdoor area, with sheltered seating among plants and flower pots. The cherry on the cake is the private outdoor swimming pool with views across the Tuscan hills.
When you manage to drag yourself away from the blissful privacy of Vacanza nel Bosco, there’s loads in the area worth exploring, starting with Tyrrhenian beaches like Spiaggia Caletta (10 minutes’ drive) and Quercetano Bay (15 minutes), both with crystal-clear waters. If you’re longing for shade and quiet, find the wooded trail that leads to the Cascate della Mua waterfalls (15 minutes). Keep climbing all the way to the top of Monte Pelato for sweeping views of the coast.

Local attractions
A hike at the Riserva Naturale Lago di Santa Luce (five minutes’ drive) rewards with potential sightings of marsh harriers over the reeds fringing the lake, plus herons and nightingales. In the surrounding hills you might also come across porcupines and foxes.
Livorno (half an hour) is a coastal city dominated by the Fortezza Nuova, a 16th-century moated citadel that’s now a lush park. Stroll through the city centre, following your nose to a restaurant serving the local fish stew cacciucco, then head to the expansive chequered Terrazza Mascagni for views of the harbour.
Piazza del Duomo in Pisa (45 minutes) is unmissable: it is on this large grassy square that the city’s most iconic sight (a certain leaning tower…) stands, alongside a marble cathedral (with an imposing altar and striped arches) and the elegantly ornate Battistero di San Giovanni. Across the river Arno, in the south of the city, is a famed Keith Haring mural: Tuttomondo.
