- Well-equipped site on the outskirts of Syracuse
- A 10-minute drive from the coast and Neapolis archaeological park
- Bar on site; within walking distance of cafés and restaurants
Sicily-bound sorts in search of a seriously good Syracuse spot should certainly take a look at Sosta Camper Claud Car, a well-located site just outside the city centre.
Pitches here are supplied with lots of handy features: campervans and tourers can hook up to a fresh water supply and black water drainage system, and there’s an electrical connection available for every pitch. A launderette is on site for keeping togs in top condition, and there’s a bar that guests can retreat to for cool beers while waiting for that wash cycle to finish (or any other reason you care to suggest).
Those pitches are also pretty niftily located for lots of local outings: a drive of 10 minutes or so will get you to the city centre for restaurants, bars and shops or to spend many an hour touring the many ancient attractions around the UNESCO-listed Neapolis archaeological park. The gorgeous island-based Ortigia area is 15 minutes’ drive away for more historic wanders, and there are plenty of beaches and coves within a 20-minute drive (the nearest being four kilometres from the site).
If such action-packed days require chilled-out evenings, feel free to set up a barbecue at your pitch or take a short stroll to one of the cafés or restaurants nearby. Safe slumbers should be sorted too, as the site is guarded and video monitored 24 hours a day to ensure the security of all guests.

Local attractions
Any Syracuse sojourn simply must include a trip to the Neapolis archaeological park (10 minutes’ drive), a sprawling site packed that’s home to ancient amphitheatres, religious relics and the Ear of Dionysius cave. To see some of the antiquities (actually, quite a lot of the antiquities) that have been unearthed nearby, meander on from the park to the Paolo Orsi Archaeology Museum.
The historic island of Ortigia (15 minutes) is another that should certainly be on the schedule – cross the bridge from the city centre to visit the Greek Temple of Apollo, the 13th-century Castello Maniace and the fancy Duomo. There’s an excellent market over here too, and a splendid selection of cafés to rest feet and sample local snacks (such as the sweet – and potentially addictive – cannoli).
Such amblings can be hot work, so it’s a fine idea to plan some down time at one of the local beaches: the city’s own beach is about 10 minutes’ drive away, or you may like to head out of town to Avola (20 minutes), Calamosche (35 minutes) or the seaside village of Marzamemi (45 minutes). Alternatively, opt for a good dunking at Aretusa Park waterpark (10 minutes).
