  • Family-friendly site with private beach on Sicily’s north coast
  • Less than 30 minutes from Nebrodi and Madonie Parks
  • Spectacular historic city of Cefalù 30 minutes' drive away
Is your perfect holiday all go, go, go, or is it all eat, sleep, sunbathe? Maybe it has a bit of balance… At Camping Lo Scoglio, a seaside site 15 minutes’ drive from the medieval village of Tusa in the Messina region of Sicily, keeping busy and staying relaxed are both within easy reach. Lo Scoglio is 25 minutes from the edge of Nebrodi Park and 10 minutes from the edge of Madonie Park – hikers and bikers should set their sights on either for trails among forests and mountains, and stunning views towards the sea. You might also go rafting or swimming at the stunning Gole di Tiberio gorge (25 minutes away) or climb into the saddle at Sicily Horse Tours, Pollina, for a trekking tour. When you need to cool off, toddle down to the private pebble beach (accessed directly from the site) to relax in the sun, have a stroll along the waterfront or go for a dip. All of that activity is bound to make you hungry, so you’ll be glad to hear you won’t have to go far to satisfy your appetite – order up a meal in the on-site restaurant, then wash it down with a drink at the bar-tobacconist. If you’d prefer to fend for yourself, there’s a small shop on site where you can grab some essentials (supermarkets about 20 minutes away) or you can nab a table at one of the restaurants within half an hour of Lo Scoglio.

Power optional earth tent, travel trailer or trailer tent campsite

Local attractions

When getting a feel for this part of Sicily, start in the hillside village of Tusa, from where you can get spectacular views down to the coast, then travel onwards to the millennia-old Halaesa Arconidea, an ancient Sicilian-Greek city dated to 403BC, to wander the ruins. The seaside city of Cefalù is half an hour from Camping Lo Scoglio and is an absolute must-visit; if you’re stuck for time, head to the Episcopal Palace, the scenic Temple of Diana and the Church of Purgatory. If you’re up for going a little further afield, the cities of Palermo and Messina, and the town of Milazzo, are all just a little over an hour away. You can see the stunning Aeolian islands from the beach at Lo Scoglio and an even more excellent option is to see them up close during your hol. These UNESCO sites are a bit of a trek – an hour to Milazzo, then another two on a boat – but they're very much worth it: explore the volcano on Stromboli and the flower-filled valleys of Salina, then step back in time on Alicudi, where boats and mules are your only ways of getting around.
