There's loads to do around this seaside setting, such as booking an excursion on site to the Aeolian Islands to explore Stromboli Crater or Valle i Muria beach; taking in the vistas from Quattrocchi or Sciara del Fuoco viewpoint; or visiting the archaeological museum boat Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano. It's 40 minutes' drive to Nebrodi National Park, dotted with the ruins of Byzantine monasteries and churches. Hiking and mountain biking are the main activity options, on the lower slopes among holm oaks and cork trees, or further up through oak and beech forests. This is a wildlife haven too, so keep an eye out for foxes, hares, porcupines and Nebrodian black pigs. Cefalù, just over an hour's drive away, is well worth a day trip for the long beach running parallel to the town, as well as sights such as the medieval district and the Tempio di Diana, an ancient megalithic monument with spectacular views out over the sea.
