How’s this for a spectacular location: on the eastern coast of Sicily; overlooked by the lofty silhouette of Mount Etna; and (added bonus for fans of ‘The White Lotus’) a 40-minute drive from Taormina, setting for the second season of the US TV series. Well, that’s exactly where Camping Mokambo is – not bad, right? Level grassy pitches sit in the shade of tall palm trees, surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation – it’s a spot conducive to afternoon siestas lulled by a gentle breeze. The site also has direct access to a private beach of fine gravel, so you might prefer to head there, instead, and stretch out on a sun lounger, snoozing or taking refreshing dips into the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. The sea is pretty shallow close to the shore, which means children can splash in and out of the waves safely. The equipped beach is open from mid-June to mid-September; outside this period, you will have to bring your own umbrellas and chairs (or just unfurl a towel and bring lots of sun cream…). After a day at the beach, leave the kids in the playground (or the games room) and start making plans for dinner. What will it be: wood-fired pizza and local seafood from the restaurant? Perhaps you’d rather light up the barbecue (provided) and grill a few burgers. Provisions can be sourced from the on-site mini-mart or from the shops in the town of Mascali (five minutes’ drive), which is also home to several eateries.

Liked La spiaggia vicina ha un mare spettacolare. Campeggio tranquillo con i servizi essenziali, c'è anche pizzeria /ristorante/bar .

Disliked Un po' trasandato , non molto curato ma pulito. Dovrebbero fare maggiore manutenzione alle piante, mentre eravamo lì (e non c'era vento) un ramo si è spezzato e ha rischiato di prendere un campeggiatore che aveva montato la tenda lì vicino...un po' inquietante. La zona non è bella ma il mare cristallino alza il punteggio.

Disliked Die Sanitäranlagen eine absolute Katastrophe so etwas habe ich noch nie gesehen. Es wird einfach nichts gemacht. Alles kaputt und es wird nichts repariert, was für mich unverständlich ist und glaubt mir die Bilder sind echt.

Disliked Das Restaurant war geschlossen obwohl es offen sein sollte, die Sanitäranlagen waren grottenschlecht und Uhr alt, der Preis ist für diese Art von Camping zu hoch.

From the manager: Es tut mir leid, dass Ihr Aufenthalt auf unserem Campingplatz so enttäuschend war. Die Sanitäranlagen sind zwar renovierungsbedürftig, werden aber mehrmals täglich gereinigt. Ein älteres, aber sauberes Bad ist meiner Meinung nach besser als ein neues, aber schmutziges. Das Restaurant sollte eigentlich geöffnet sein, aber der Manager ist in Urlaub gefahren – dafür können wir nichts. Gute Restaurants finden Sie nur 1 km entfernt. Vom Campingplatz aus können Sie an einer geführten Tour auf den Ätna teilnehmen oder ein Auto mieten, um nahegelegene Orte wie Taormina, die Giardini Naxos, Catania, die Alcántara-Schlucht, Acitrezza und den Ätna zu besuchen. Taormina und Catania sind auch mit dem Zug erreichbar. Der Bahnhof ist 3 km entfernt, und es gibt einen Transferservice. Wir konnten leider nicht gemeinsam einchecken, da Sie während Ihrer Mittagspause ankamen; wir haben uns erst nach Ihrer Abreise gesehen. Ich stehe unseren Gästen jederzeit zur Verfügung. Sollten Sie mich nicht an der Rezeption finden, bin ich in der Nähe der Sanitäranlagen (Reinigung). Ich sehe, Sie haben unsere Internetverbindung zumindest zu schätzen gewusst!

Local attractions

Accessed via a hair-raising zig-zagging road, Taormina sits atop a rocky promontory with far-reaching views of the coast and Etna. Stroll the pretty streets, stopping for a granita and for a selfie against the backdrop of Isola Bella below, then head to the Teatro Antico di Taormina, a partially ruined Greco-Roman amphitheatre that is still being used for live music and drama performances. Start your exploration of Catania (50 minutes) from Piazza del Duomo, an elegant square with a Baroque basilica and the Fountain of the Elephant. Head to the Parco Maestranze for a little respite in the shade, then see if you can catch a concert or an opera at the Teatro Massimo Bellini. Excursions to Mount Etna (one hour) depart directly from the site, or you can take advantage of a transfer service to the Circumetnea station, from where a train takes you on a sightseeing tour of the volcano. There are also hiking trails on the slopes of the mountain, not to mention several wineries worth a look…
