It's free, quick and easy!
- Holiday village on Sardinia's north-east coast, five minutes to beach
- Pizzeria, bar, shop, open-air theatre and entertainment on site
- Five minutes from the boat to the islands of Tavolara and Molara
Sublime views and serene seas... on a Sardinian site that seems to have the lot.
Looking out onto the granite isle of Tavolara, surrounded by a protected marine reserve, Camping Tavolara has a prime spot of Sardinia’s north-eastern coast. The site is a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk from a white sand beach with shallow clear waters (they’ll ferry you there and back on a shuttle bus if you like).
The team at the site take Sardinia seriously, priding themselves on using solar power, electric vehicles, water and waste management to create a green resort, where the good times never interfere with the very special island environment.
This is more of a village than a place to stay: a bar-restaurant serves local dishes and woodfired pizzas, there's a mini supermarket for stocking up, and an open-air theatre and entertainment evenings are laid on in the summer. You can arrange excursions and diving and snorkelling expeditions from the site and down on Porto Taverna beach try out the kayaks, pedalos and windsurfing.
Porto Taverna town has an abundance of eateries and bars, many facing the sea, others in cool and shady spots around the town. Between the site and the white sands the quiet lagoon is especially loved for walks at sunset: you might even spot a pink flamingo or two.

Local attractions
A 25-minute drive takes you to the energetic town of Olbia, with a much snapped palm-lined waterfront and a much regarded archaeological museum. You can sample some of Sardinia’s ancient past yourself by climbing the hill to see the nuraghe, conical brick towers built by the island’s original settlers 4,000 years ago. No-one knows why they built these monuments all over the island but the ones at Olbia have fab views across the bay.
More ancient sights are at La Caletta an hour's drive away; from there, boats ship you to the Grotte del Bue Marino, a network of caves with Neolithic paintings, other-worldly rock formations and the largest underground lake in the world.
Boat trips, a treat in themselves, depart from Porto San Paolo (five minutes’ drive), calling in at the wilderness isles of Molara and Tavolara. Diving and snorkelling expeditions let you explore the waters of the Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo marine reserve, brimming with basking sharks, dolphins, whales and seagoing tortoises.
For quieter times, five-minute car trips or 40-minute ambles get you down to the beaches at Dorata and Cala Finanza, less-visited spots with secluded little bays and coves.
