It's free, quick and easy!
- In a pine forest in Lido Bruno, with direct access to private beach
- A 15-minute drive from the historic centre of Taranto
- Sea-view restaurant, surf lessons and sailing school
Fancy a long schlep to the beach? Thought not. Set your sights then on Campeggio Sun Bay, on the seafront in the little resort of Lido Bruno.
This 16,000-square metre site has its own private beach, so you can stumble straight from sleep to sand for days of sunbathing and swimming or active hours playing beach volleyball or picking up the techniques of surfing, sailing or scuba diving at the watersports centres. If you’re settling in for the day, perhaps opt for the umbrellas and sun loungers of the serviced area; there’s free use of the spacious ‘towels only’ area for all guests too.
Should you ever find yourself in danger of overheating, retreat inland a little to the site’s pine forest for a shaded snooze, or select a sea-view table in the bar-restaurant to fill up on woodfired pizza or other local treats. Any bambini that don’t share your enthusiasm for lengthy periods of sitting down can be kept amused at the large play area nearby.
If you’re able to peel yourselves away from the sands, venturing out is a cinch thanks to the shuttle service that whisks folks out on excursions or to nearby markets, and the town bus that stops just outside the site. Bikes are available to rent for those who’d rather use pedal power to get around.

Local attractions
It’s worth getting up from that sun lounger and taking the 15-minute trip to Taranto, a well preserved former Greek-Spartan colony. There’s an excellent archaeology museum in the town, along with a mix of other historic sights: a Romanesque cathedral, the medieval Aragonese Castle and the ancient Temple of Poseidon among them.
A little further inland (45 minutes from the site) is the little town of Martina Franca, a pretty place for a wander around the whitewashed homes, ornate churches and grand Palazzo Ducale. Wineries to visit are just outside town if you need a restorative tipple, and you might consider continuing your journey with a stop at Alberobello to see its conical limestone houses known as trulli.
If you’d rather stick to the coast, there are several other beaches you can hit for a change of scenery – perhaps try Tramontone for soft sands or Lido Gandoli for jetskiing and paddleboarding. A wildlife-spotting boat trip with Jonian Dolphin Conservation, 15 minutes away, is highly recommended too.
