  • Shaded pitches in pine forest on a rural site near Otranto in Salento
  • Five minutes’ walk to the Bay of Turks, 10 minutes’ drive to Otranto
  • Seasonal produce, an organic shop and café bar on site
Dreaming of a camping holiday under the warming southern Italian sun, with a sandy beach and lively seaside town close by? Peruse the pics of Agriturismo Fontanelle, in southern Italy’s Salento region, as chances are it’s a good match for you. Set in the grounds of a historic farmhouse, the grass pitches here sit in the shade of the pine trees, which is most welcome on those days when the sun is particularly strong. A path leads directly from the pitches down through the trees and to the Bay of Turks (five minutes’ stroll). And should you tire of the sun and the sand (not likely, is it?), head straight for lovely Otranto (10 minutes’ drive or a bus ride away) for an evening of bar hopping with sea views. The eco-conscious site owners do much to ensure that food kilometres are kept to a minimum: they have their own organic food brand for sale in the shop and café (open in high summer), including such staples as olive oil and tomato purées. You can also nab locally made breads and pastries, wines and cheeses as well as seasonal Fontanelle-grown fruit and veg. And the practicalities? Spacious pitches have electric hook-ups and access to a very smart communal shower block with a clutch of amenities like washing machines (extra charge) and washing-up areas to make life more than comfortable.

Liked: Il campeggio era davvero bello, tranquillo e ben attrezzato. Vogliamo tornarci in futuro.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: The beach and the forest are stunning. Staff are very friendly. Toilet block and showers are modern and well kept.

Disliked: Staff have to maintain the site, as well as tend to the olive trees (on one side) and to build more pitches (on the other side). This means that at times, the site can be noisy from petrol engines noises for 3-4 h at a time, usually in the evening (siesta is respected). Electric gardening tools would limit the noise from keeping grass down etc & make available a few forest electric pitches for campervans?

From the manager: Dear guest, Thank you for your review! We appreciate that you enjoyed the location and the kindness of our staff; we always strive to make our guests feel welcome. It was nice to meet you and host you. However, we strongly disagree with your disapproval towards those who work hard in the countryside while also respecting our guests. Those who choose to stay in an "agriturismo" should be aware that they are in the countryside and should expect that the management of the field requires time and specific methods. There are also laws that establish the times for mowing the grass in the countryside to prevent fires. Mowing the grass with a tractor 2-3 times a year from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm does not seem to us like a disturbance worth reproach. We apologize, but we do not have access to electric tractors, and it is certainly not sustainable to mow the grass present in 3 hectares of land with a small electric vehicle, which would require weeks of work. It so happened that even our countryside neighbor worked (for the same reasons) the evening before, and you heard the noise. We tried to explain and make you understand that we had done our best to respect the timing, and we also apologized for our work, but evidently this was not enough to activate your understanding for having disturbed two of the 6 afternoons in which you stayed here. We hope that those who read your review and our response have the sensitivity to understand that this was an isolated incident and not a systematic operation of indifference towards our guests. Best regards, Marina

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: Quite simply the most lovely campsite we have ever stayed at. Both its dreamy location next to the Baia dai Turchi (a romantic walk through pine trees to sandy empty beaches in May, takes just 5mins through a path at the end of the camping site) as well as beautifully appointed pitches & facilities - makes this a destination we are already longing to return to. The owners are delightful & you can order fresh grown produce & pastries delivered to your pitch. We loved our stay.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Of course, the soft sands of the Bay of Turks are accessed straight from the campsite, but if you’d like to see more of Salento, several coastal trails lead to the rocky beaches and cliffs of remote Punta Palascia and its landmark lighthouse. Just a bit further down the coast is Porto Badisco (20 minutes’ drive), where an often-deserted sandy beach sits in a rocky inlet with sea grottos to swim into. Another lovely wild spot is Alimini Lakes (20 minutes’ walk), with two lakes that are home to herons and flamingos; it’s popular for wild swimming, forest walks and boat cruises. Otranto (10 minutes’ drive) is the easternmost town in Italy, and surely deserves a visit for its lovely location overlooking the Adriatic Sea, a nose around the Romanesque cathedral and its mosaics and to tour the 15th-century castle in the town’s former defence walls. Alternatively you could avoid all that, and head straight for a beachfront bar to put your feet up in the sun with a glass of chilled white wine.
