  • Peaceful campsite on a farm five minutes’ drive from Alimini in Apulia
  • Five minutes’ drive from beaches and lakes; Otranto 15 minutes
  • Tree-shaded pitches among working orchards and vegetable gardens
Spread over several flower-filled hectares on a small organic farm, Agricampeggio Darwin sits amid a rich flora of Mediterranean maquis scrub, oaks and fruit trees including olives, mulberries and carobs. This Apulia site came into existence in 2009, celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of English naturalist Charles Darwin. Managed by Andrea and Raffaella and run in conjunction with the World Wide Organization of Organic Farms (WOOF) – a global organisation for people working the land in exchange for board – the site is divided into zones: the tree-sheltered camping meadows, the orchard and vegetable garden. Guests can choose their own spacious pitches, and facilities on site include hot showers, a kids’ playground and info points if you’re seeking inspiration for excursions and day trips. You’re welcome to cook in the barbecue zone, and any essentials can be picked up in Alimini (five minutes’ drive). Any digital nomads needing to keep in touch with the outside world can head for the laid-back alfresco meeting area, and if you’re after chilled evenings, the wooden music gazebo is just the spot for a song or two with fellow campers. One last thing: guests are politely requested to use natural detergents only on site, as any type of chemical product is banned.

FHU grass and earth campsite

Liked: The outdoor shower was very nice even though the water was cold by night, the cats and the tranquility.

Disliked: The indoor showers and toilets weren’t particularly clean and couldn’t be locked, the unannounced city tax, photo’s being taken of our ID and the request to leave one behind.

Local attractions

Heading for the beach? There are white sands and lively lidos backed by dunes at Spiaggia Alimini (five minutes’ drive), while the slender strip of sand at Baia dei Turchi (take picnics and water) and the small cove at Caletta Toraiello (both 10 minutes) have natural rocky platforms for sunbathing and diving into the sea. Further down the coastline, you can swim into the Grotta delle Pupe (also 10 minutes). Keen birdwatchers, be sure to take your binoculars when you visit the Alimini Lakes (five minute’ drive or 10 minutes by bike), where you can explore the surrounding maquis scrubland and hike through pine forest when keeping an eye out for white storks, flamingos and cranes. To acquaint yourself with the history of the Apulia region, spend a day exploring the 15th-century Castello Aragonese and admiring the mosaic floors and ornate ceilings at the medieval Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata in ancient Otranto (15 minutes’ drive). When you fancy a break from all that culture, settle down for a seafood feast in a restaurant with Adriatic Sea views.
