After a city break? Or prefer a beach holiday? You can have both at Villa Messapia, which is near both Torre dell’Orso beach and the ancient attractions of the historic city of Otranto – and it's got comfortable accommodation surrounded by greenery and olive trees for the time in between too. You’ll soon be feeling chilled at Villa Messapia, where time seems to stand still on a farm stretching over a hectare of land. Life is suitably relaxed: snooze under the sun on loungers and swings, refresh under the outdoor shower in the private gardens, or chat with fellow guests as you spark up a barbecue at the terraced eating area. Five minutes’ walk takes you to the hamlet of Torre Saracena and all the services you need: a supermarket for picking up local foodie treats, a bar for that all-important morning cappuccino, a pizzeria and seafood restaurant, a pharmacy and a petrol station. For bigger shopping trips, head for Melendugno (15 minutes). For those travelling on public transport, the site owners provide a shuttle service to and from the airports at Lecce (half an hour) and Brindisi (an hour and 10 minutes). Both need to be booked ahead of your stay (for an extra charge) by selecting the relevant extra on your booking. The owners also provide maps of the region, and can organise excursions on horseback, by quad bike or boat.

Liked: Zona molto tranquilla abbiamo lasciato tutto dentro le tenda e nessuno ha toccato nulla, il personale gentilissimo, molto vicino alla spiaggia di torre dell’orso e lontano dal traffico. Di giorno non abbiamo sofferto il caldo perché stavamo al mare la sera in tenda si sta meglio. Il posto bellissimo è si vedeva anche il tramonto, lo spazio per la tenda è ottimo! Nonostante qualche piccolo accorgimento che si potrebbe fare ci siamo trovati benissimo!

Disliked: Il bagno purtroppo è un po’ trasparente e non si chiude bene, l’acqua per lavarsi c’è solo fredda (noi ci siamo arrangiati mettendo un boccione d’acqua al sole)
E c’è una sola presa quindi se si è tanti bisogna condividere la presa
Ma nulla che non si possa risolvere basta sapersi adattare

Disliked: -Spazio inadeguato a posizionare delle tende (a meno che non si voglia bruciare sotto al sole, data la totale assenza di ombra)

- Bagno e cucina praticamente nello stesso ambiente (li separa un cartongesso)

- Presa elettrica unica per tutto il giardino

Liked: De gezamelijke koelkast, vriendelijke eigenaren

Disliked: Alleen een koude douche.
De enige aanwezige wc zat in de doucheruimte.
Wat op de site stond klopte niet.
Iedere avond herrie van het avondprogramma van resorts vlakbij in de buurt.Ging tot middernacht door.
Geen warm water om afwas te doen.

Local attractions

All the attractions of Salento are waiting to be explored. First stop may well be one of the Puglian beaches spread along the Adriatic Sea. Standout among these is Torre dell’Orso (five minutes’ drive), with clear water backed by cliffs and a pair of well-known rock stacks called the Two Sisters in the middle of the bay. Caves like Grotta del Pepe dot the coastline, and there are rock arches as well as calm blue pools for sea swimming at Grotta del Canale (both five minutes). For a spot of city sightseeing, it’s hard to beat Otranto (20 minutes), where you can pace the castle’s ramparts for gorgeous sea views, have look at the medieval mosaics in the Romanesque cathedral and graze on aperitivo snacks along the seafront promenade. Lovely Lecce (half an hour) rewards a visit with a Roman amphitheatre, a mighty castle and a dazzling array of Baroque-era architecture. Stroll its piazzas in the early evening, select one of scores of terrace cafés and take front-row seats to watch the locals drift past on their evening walks.
