The farm and vineyards

  • Scenic site among Barolo vineyards, 10 minutes' drive from La Morra
  • Dozens of wineries within 15 minutes’ drive; an hour from Turin
  • Tours and tastings, large garden, alfresco dining and helicopter trips
Fancy a tipple? Grab your favourite wine glass, emotionally prepare the kids for tipsy mummy and daddy, and pour yourself over to La Rosa nel Borgo, a family-friendly site on a vineyard five minutes’ drive from the small village of Barolo and 10 minutes from La Morra in Cuneo. This is the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Montferrato, a UNESCO-recognised wine region with stunning landscapes and more vineyards than any one person (or any horde) could sip their way through. There are dozens of wineries offering tours and tastings within 15 minutes’ drive of the site (though start with those at the site itself, paired with some local eats), many of which can be reached on foot along trails that start directly from La Rosa nel Borgo. Guests can also get a glimpse of the less liquid side of viticulture, and are welcome to take part in the spring-summer work on vegetation and (more exciting perhaps) the autumn harvest. They can also get hands-on with the grapes that are destined to be transformed into Barolo wine – certainly something to cheers for… For those who don’t drink, kids who are deemed too young to have a drink or two, and those who just need a break from the constant buzz, there’s plenty else hereabouts: get a handy overview of the region by hopping in the site helicopter for a fly-over, or stick to terra firma with trips to the museums, Old Town and gourmands’ paradise of Alba, 15 minutes away. Fill stomachs for days of adventures and slurping with a large breakfast on site (request in advance) then, when the satisfaction of bread, cheese, cold cuts and pastries wears off, toddle along to the nearby restaurants and trattorias for lunch and dinner – otherwise, throw some food on the barbie and retreat to the portico for alfresco dining beneath the stars.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Great little site on edge of vine groves. Wine tasting was a lovely experience with owner. Very relaxed site in beautiful spot.

Disliked: If we are being picky, no chemical waste point is a disadvantage for longer stay. Pitches not numbered so risk of guest parking too close. Not owners fault.

Liked: Fabulous view of the vineyard, lovely family who run the site and produce great wines. You can walk through the vines and eventually reach the hilltop village of La Morra. I would definitely return to this small site.

Disliked: No shop within easy walking distance. Come stocked up. Alba town a few k away by bike or vehicle though.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: What a fab little campsite in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany. A thoroughly relaxing experience was had there. The host was very welcoming and could not do enough to help you during our stay. There were vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. Around the site which was within an orchard were fruit trees, hazelnut trees. The hazelnuts were very nice! We also had a wine tasting which was very informative and tasty. The wines were very good and we ordered a few bottles to take with us. The facilities were very clean with toilet paper and soap supplied.

Disliked: None

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Arrived mid afternoon just after wine tasting had started and we were invited to join if we would like. This was a lovely opportunity to get to know the owner and other campers. Real family feel. Fantastic wines (came away with a couple of boxes!) Friendly welcome and good facilities soap and toilet roll provided! Facilities are limited with only 2 showers and toilets but manageable as only a small site. Site is in the orchard so within the fruit and hazelnut trees but we still had room to put up our roof tent.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Once all the wine’s worn off, traipse up the towers and gander at views over the lush Langhe region from the 14th-century Castello di Serralunga d’Alba military stronghold (10 minutes’ drive); on a Sunday, you could also wander off to Castello di Lagnasco (50 minutes) for a tour of the museum and gardens. If the countryside's calling out to you (and even more varieties of booze appeal), the UNESCO-registered Hills of Barbaresco wine region are within an hour's drive. Cities are also particularly bellissimo in northern Italy – try Cuneo for its grand architecture and planetarium (an hour’s drive) or carve out some time for Turin's art galleries and shopping (an hour and five minutes).
