  • Dog-friendly site with a grassy beach on the shores of Lake Iseo
  • Around 15 minutes’ drive away from the Franciacorta vineyards
  • Bar, restaurant and pizzeria with a terrace; playground on site
Waking up to the lush, green shores of Lake Iseo sounds like a mighty-fine morning routine, does it not? Lakefront Camping Cave has excellent views over the water and the surrounding green slopes, and even more temptingly, it’s set just outside of the Franciacorta wine region, around 35 minutes' drive north of Brescia and less than 10 minutes' walk from the village of Pilzone. Back to that morning routine… The terraced site is shaded by mature olive and oak trees, surrounded by wildflower meadows and has pitches separated by olive trees and hedges. Freshen up at the modern, accessible facilities, which include a toilet and shower block with a separate parent and baby bathroom, and coin-operated washing machines. You could break the fast by setting up your own breakfast barbecue and then get stuck into windsurfing on site. Bike hire is available in the village, so you’re also pretty set to do a circuit of the 40-mile-ish cycle path around the lake's shoreline. Canoeing/kayaking, fishing, sailing, and other watersports are all available around the lake, and there’s boat storage available on site. Historic Roman sites, vineyards and boat trips to the lake's island, Montisola, are all nearby too. After a busy day out, the bar and terrace restaurant at Camping Cave are a nice touch if you want to let someone else do the cooking and dine with views of the lake.

Local attractions

The Franciacorta vineyards are a quick drive from Camping Cave for a day among the vines, with Montina Franciacorta (15 minutes’ drive) also mixing up the wine-tasting activities with contemporary art in the on-site museum. In Brescia (35 minutes), you'll get to take a look at some of the most important Roman ruins in Lombardy. If that doesn’t already make the city worthy of a spot on your itinerary, wait until you see its hilltop castle and the cool artefacts inside the weapons and armour museum. If you’d rather have less history and more thrills, take yourself to Gardaland Resort (half an hour) for a day of lighthearted rides and rollercoasters. You may want to retrace a similar route on another day of your trip, for the theme park is at the south end of Lake Garda, and its southern resort towns (from 50 minutes’ drive) have gorgeous beaches. Castello Scaligero di Sirmione (an hour) is one of Lake Garda's famed spots.
