  • Well-equipped site on Lake Vico, half an hour’s drive from Viterbo
  • Villa Farnese 15 minutes’ drive; Rome and Lido di Tarquinia one hour
  • Private grassy beach; paddleboard and fishing boat hire; yoga lessons
Fancy being within one hour’s drive of historic cities in not one, not two, but three regions in central Italy? Cottage Beach Vico sits a 15-minute drive from Caprarola, in Lazio, but it also puts you within easy driving distance of Tuscany and Umbria, so you’ll have no shortage of archaeological, artistic and gastronomic destinations to explore. That’s if you manage to tear yourself away from the attractions of this splendid site. What are those attractions, you may ask? Well, the location, for starters: right on the north eastern shore of Lake Vico, in the middle of a nature reserve dotted with oak trees and chestnut groves. Guests have the run of a private grassy beach with sun loungers and umbrellas; and there are spectacular views of the sunset from the pontoon stretching into the lake. Active types can rent a paddleboard or a canoe to explore the waters; keep your eyes peeled for resident flocks of grebe and for terrapins. More meditative folks might prefer to relax and stretch with a yoga lesson (by prior arrangement), or to hire a fishing boat and angle for pike and tench. Fish dishes, delicious pizzas and other classics from the regional cuisine can be ordered via the in-house catering service from a nearby restaurant. When you’re ready to venture out of the site, you might want to hike the surrounding woodland; book a guided tour of Viterbo (half an hour’s drive), Rome (one hour) or other nearby cities; or head to the coast: the sandy beach at Lido di Tarquinia is just over one hour’s drive away.

Local attractions

Built in the mid-1500s, hilltop Villa Farnese (15 minutes’ drive) is a five-sided fortress that develops around a central court. Check out its elegant halls, decorated with colourful Mannerist frescoes; its monumental spiral staircase; and its formal gardens, dotted with water features and statues. There are several spa complexes in the surrounding hills, including the Terme dei Papi (35 minutes), with a monumental hot-water outdoor pool and a natural steam room carved out of the rock; and the Terme di Stigliano (45 minutes), built on ancient Roman temples and surrounded by forest-covered hills. Set aside a day to explore Rome, starting with the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and other ancient ruins; then check out artistic treasures in Renaissance churches; visit St Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel; and climb the Spanish Steps. And don’t forget to have delicious gelato while strolling through the city’s splendid squares.
