- Simple bunkhouse in the Monti Aurunci Natural Park
- Accessible from Formia by car, via shuttle or on foot
- Starting point for hikes and bike routes; guided e-bike tours to book
Up among the peaks of the Monti Aurunci Natural Park and with views down to the coastline, Rifugio Acquaviva is in a splendid spot for some outdoor time in the Lazio countryside.
The surrounding Acquaviva area is full of excellent options for hikes and mountain bike outings, as the team on site keep details of various routes around the area – from easy rambles to more challenging hikes or uphill climbs. Along the way you might go through forests, past streams and along shepherds’ paths, with plenty of gorgeous views, ancient sights (including dinosaur footprints) and chances to sample local produce.
Those who aren’t fully confident of finding their way in this mountainous area can hire GPS trackers on site or join guided e-bike tours; there are also e-bikes for hire on site if you’re not able to bring your own.
The accommodation here is in a simple but comfortable bunkhouse, with a cosy living area (with a fire to ward off the chilly evenings), a kitchen and a couple of bathrooms (with hot water but no shower). As this is a wild and remote location it’s best to bring your food supplies with you, although there is a shop about 20 minutes’ drive away and a couple of restaurants is a few minutes’ walk away.
To get to the site, you can either drive along an ancient road (which becomes a dirt road for the final two kilometres) or hike up from Formia station in about three hours. There’s also the option of booking a shuttle from the station if you’re travelling on foot.

Local attractions
The Maremoto Association, which runs the refuge, has plotted out a good number of scenic circular hikes and bike trails for guests to follow – it’s a very good idea to have a copy of its local map to help you find your way along these. The team on site can also sort you out with guided bike tours, some of which include tastings of local produce like olive oil and the area’s favourite marzolino cheese.
When you’re not hiking or biking, the reception staff can help you organise things like sailing trips, paddleboarding and windsurfing down at the coast. There are also various caves to explore around the area, along with the Eremo di San Michele Arcangelo (half an hour’s drive/two hour’s walk), carved into the mountainside in 1895 to replace a sanctuary that had been here since the 9th century.
Down in Formia (half an hour’s drive), visit the archaeology museum and Roman cisterns or head a little further along the coast to spend some time at one of the beach areas.
