A winning combination of elegance and convenience will draw you to Emilia Romagna’s Agriturismo Argaland, set in the grounds of a handsome farmhouse 10 minutes’ drive from the myriad of cultural and gastronomic attractions in central Parma. Surrounded by fields and peaceful countryside, the spacious gravel touring pitches have views of colourful sunsets on clear nights too.
Inside the property’s modern barn is a reading room with antique furniture, cosy sofas, tourist information and art books showcasing Parma’s cathedral, palazzos and museums. Moving outside, the courtyard has a covered dining area and looks over a compact play area with table football and a ping-pong table. Adjacent is a pretty and neatly kept garden scattered with hammocks and picnic tables for alfresco feasts.
There is no restaurant, but there are informal dining options right across the road, and after all, the centre of one of Italy’s most-renowned foodie cities is only 10 minutes by car, or 20 minutes on public transport (the bus stop is by the entrance to the estate).

Local attractions
Any self-respecting art lover will be keen to get to Parma’s historic city centre (10 minutes’ drive) and tour the fresco-covered interior of the striking Romanesque cathedral, before moving on to the Renaissance-style Farnese Theatre and works by Canaletto and Da Vinci in the 16th-century Palazzo della Pilotta’s National Gallery.
Other cultural hotspots to fit in around Parma include the lavish baroque-inspired Ducal Palace at Reggia di Colorno (half an hour), filled with art and fine furniture, and the town of Fontanellato (25 minutes), with its gargantuan 14th-century castle, pilgrimage church and narrow streets lined with indie shops and cafés.
For a break from all that heritage, have a wander along the banks of the Taro River to build up an appetite for sampling some delicious regional food. Eating is definitely something to enjoy in Parma; try Parmesan and cured Parma ham in speciality shops on Piazza Ghiaia, or dine on prosciutto and cheese platters at one of the city’s many restaurants.
