  • In a pine forest overlooking a wide sandy beach, 3km from Milazzo
  • Spectacular sea views and famed sunsets
  • Restaurant with terrace, pizzeria, bar, beach parties and boat hire
You'll never, ever (ever) become bored in Borgia with the location of this lush seaside site. Or with what's on offer for guests to do while there, from activities on the beach to stage musicals in the amphitheatre… all in gorgeous and colourful surroundings by the deep blue waters of the Calabrian coast. Camping Villaggio Calabrisella is the carefully considered site of Salvatore Megna, who determined to build his own holiday village to look like a luxury villa in a scenic garden. It's in a colourful pine forest setting between Catanzaro Lido and Squillace Lido, overlooking a stunning sandy beach on the south-eastern coast of Calabria. A short path takes you to the sands, where you can hire a lounger to lounge upon, or have a dip or paddle in the warm waters of the Jonio Sea. This is a complete village – there's even a doctor on site should you need one – with a vast range of services including a shop and a newsagent, a tobacconist, a beach kiosk, a bar open all day, a pizzeria, and a restaurant with a different menu every day of tasty local cuisine. There's a huge playground too, along with sporty pursuits like football, volleyball and table tennis, or you could opt for a cool walk, cycle or mountain bike ride on one of the routes through the pinewood. But probably the most fab feature of Villaggio Calabrisella is its July and August activity programme, crammed with events and options for all ages and tastes. Kids have a club with craft sessions, show productions and more, while grownups can join in with aerobics, aquagym, football and beach volleyball tournaments; families can then meet up again in the evening for the huge variety of shows including theme nights, dancing, theatre, games and live music.

Local attractions

This spectacular setting is on the Calabrian coast, in the Province of Catanzaro 20 minutes' drive from Borgia. Cycling and walking paths lead from the site through the forest and alongside the sea if you want to ditch the car and stay close to your scenic seaside base. As this is ancient land, quite a pile of archaeological options are in the area too, such as the seaside town of Scolacium and its old Roman ruins, less than 10 minutes' away, and the Tomb of Cassiodoro, Roman baths and natural history museum in Copanello di Stalettì, within 15. The tale of most of it is told at Scolacium, in the museum attached to the famed archaeological park. More ancient sights as well as a cathedral and a Norman castle are at Squillace, eight kilometres away, the old seaside town that was once a vital part of the Roman empire. More modernly, kids of all sorts will have a blast at the Mediterranean Biodiversity Park half an hour away, covering 60 splendidly scenic hectares of wildlife haven, art installations and a wildlife rescue centre. The park is in province capital Catanzaro, which you should certainly stick around at for beaut Gulf of Squillace views, one of the tallest single-arch bridges in Europe at the Catanzaro Bridge, and, splendidly, a carriage museum that includes the vessel used in the famed film Gone With the Wind.
