  • Family-friendly site in the Abruzzo Apennines, near Torricella Peligna
  • Iuvanum Parco five minutes’ drive; Costa dei Trabocchi 50 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with barbecue provided and summer restaurant service
The Parco Nazionale della Majella, in the Apennine Mountains of the Abruzzo region, is yours to explore from Camping Maiella, a family-friendly site at about 900 metres above sea level, a five-minute drive (or 20-minute hike) from the town of Torricella Peligna. There’s something pretty glorious about waking up to views of several peaks close to or higher than 2,000 metres (among them Monte Amaro and Morrone) – knowing that you might well be climbing them later in the day. The park has hiking trails for all abilities (including some pretty challenging climbing routes), plus cycling tracks and bridleways. Your four-legged friend (a welcome guest at the site) is allowed on many of them; however, dogs are not permitted in protected areas – that is, where you might catch a glimpse of resident animals such as otters, wolves and bears. But back to the site… Communal amenities include a fridge freezer, a barbecue and a sheltered dining area where you can exchange summiting stories with your fellow guests, perhaps while the kids make new friends in the playground or the games room. During July and August, the owners also run a restaurant service, so you can sample locally sourced meat skewers and other traditional regional dishes. Other facilities include hot-water showers (no additional charge), a toilet block with facilities for disabled guests and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

Now largely in ruins, the temples, theatre and assorted structures at Iuvanum Parco e Museo Archeologico (five minutes’ drive or a 50-minute hike) date from as far back as the second century BC. Exhibits in the on-site museum include funerary stones and ancient cult objects. The waterfalls at the Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde (45 minutes' drive) are the tallest in the Apennines, tumbling down three dramatic tiers into the Sangro river. The surrounding forest combines both mountainous tree species and Mediterranean vegetation, plus wild orchids, and you might be able to spot birds of prey flying overhead. Need a change from the mountains? The Costa dei Trabocchi (50 minutes) is a 40-kilometre stretch lapped by the Adriatic Sea and dotted with wooden fishing structures (the ‘trabocchi’ of the name). In addition to sandy and pebbly beaches, there’s also the Via Verde cycling route – and plenty of restaurants where you can stop for freshly caught seafood.
