  • Simple farm stay in rural Kékkút 10 minutes’ drive from Lake Balaton
  • In the Balaton Uplands National Park; Balatonfüred 35 minutes’ drive
  • Local breakfast available; small farm shop and a lavender plantation
If you’re looking to stay somewhere rural and peaceful near – just not too near – Lake Balaton in the Balaton Uplands National Park, the answer might be to pitch up at Levendula Porta. Found on a small, family-owned dairy farm in the tiny rural village of Kékkút, this is a leafy spot well away from Balaton beach resorts like Ábrahámhegy (10 minutes’ drive) but close enough for easy access when you feel like catching some rays on the beach. Facilities at this simple spot may be sparse – beyond the toilet block you’ll need to be pretty self-sufficient – but there’s an essentials shop in the village and larger supermarkets within 10 minutes’ drive. On site, you can also tuck into a first-rate breakfast made with local salamis, cheeses and freshly baked bread, buy regional goodies from the small farm shop, and pick lavender (usually at the end of June) from the plantation on the property. There’s always something going on at Levendula Porta, with people coming and going and the sound of farm machinery. You can watch the cows being milked in the farmyard – and join in if you feel so inclined – but please note the owners also have several dogs and cats that roam freely, so if you have any family members who are nervous around animals, this is probably not the place for you.

Local attractions

The farm owner is always on hand to point you in the right direction if you need inspiration for days out and sightseeing. A good place to start is the Balaton Uplands National Park (direct access from the site). Here you can jump on numerous walking or cycling routes, marvel at the stark Hegyestű rock formation with its basalt columns, and keep an eye out for foxes, hares and badgers. Any kids with you will adore the chance to cuddle donkeys and take rides in horse-drawn wagons at Salföld Major (15 minutes’ drive), where you can watch displays of traditional Hungarian horsemanship too. Keep youngsters active and sneak a little bit of culture into their agenda with a climb up to Szigliget (20 minutes), the scenic ruins of a castle that has displays of medieval cooking implements as well as far-reaching views to Lake Balaton. When it comes to exploring the lake itself, head for Badacsonytomaj (15 minutes), which has a small beach but is better known as a wine-making town; you can tour several vineyards in the surrounding hills and taste the end products too. Balatonfüred (35 minutes) is one of the liveliest resorts on the northern shores of Lake Balaton, with watersports, a waterside promenade and upscale eateries.
