- Dog-friendly site with tall leafy trees 250 metres from the sea
- Walk around the ancient city of Epidaurus; Little Theatre 15 minutes’
- Taverna with traditional Greek food; mini market and café on site
The secret’s out; just 250 metres from sea and within walking distance of ruins across the ancient city of Epidaurus, there’s a quiet dog-friendly refuge with tall leafy trees and a taverna serving traditional Greek food. Camping Verdelis is the name of the place, and it’s very relaxing indeed…
It’ll take just five minutes to stroll to the Ancient Epidaurus Harbour – and from there, the 600-metre Nissi beach is only a little further on. You may want to walk 20 minutes to Gilati beach too, where it’s possible to snorkel over the Sunken City of Ancient Epidaurus or continue onto the Little Theatre at the Ancient City of Epidaurus (15 minutes’ walk) or the Acropolis of Ancient Epidavros (20 minutes’ walk).
More ancient things? The Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus on the slopes of Cynortion Mountain is 20 minutes’ drive away too and very well preserved. And that’s just a taste of the ancient sites within easy striking distance…
Meanwhile, for traditional Greek flavours (ones that can be consumed, that is), the site has its very own taverna serving traditional Greek food and a café that serves coffees, refreshments and fresh orange juice. If you’d like to sort a packed lunch or breakfast spread, the site has a mini market, which has fresh bread daily.
You might also be glad of the shade from the trees, the hot showers and the cold drinking water after the day’s adventures. Across the family-friendly site, there are men’s, women’s and shared toilets, common areas for washing utensils and clothes, a washing machine, a kids’ playroom and wifi, plus baby cribs and high chairs.

Local attractions
Epidaurus isn’t the only place with plenty of ancient archaeological sites. The Archaeological site of Mycenae (50 minutes’ drive) was once a grand citadel. Nowadays, the crumbling leftovers include the remains of an acropolis, houses, public building and storehouses.
Next up might be Nafplion (40 minutes), a scenic coastal city with an old town, coral reefs suitable for scuba diving, and activities such as sea canoeing. Or perhaps you’ll want to cross the water to an island like Poros (an hour and 40 minutes, including a ferry), a pretty place with plenty of white-sand beaches, watersports and a historical monastery.
Hydra (50 minutes’ drive to Ermioni, then a 25-minute ferry) has museums, monasteries and a gorgeous set of beaches and Spetses (55 minutes’ drive and a 10-minute ferry) is yet another island escape within reach.
That’s not all… perhaps a visit to ancient Corinth (50 minutes), Methana Volcano (an hour) or seaside resorts like Porto Cheli (50 minutes) or Ermioni (50 minutes) too?
